NightHawk is AudioQuest’s full-bore assault on both the state of the headphone art andonthelimitstowhichquality, innovation, andsustainabilitycanbeachievedatan affordable cost.

Winnerofnumerousawards, garneringcriticalacclaimthathasattimesresembledpurepoetry,NightHawkhasbeenlovinglyfeaturedinthepagesofmagazinesandwebsitesas far-reaching as Stereophile, Rolling Stone, Men’s Health, Sound and Vision,CNET,HomeTheaterReview,DigitalAudioReview,DigitalTrends, andTheVerge.

“These headphones present recordings with a bare-feet-on-black-soil naturalness that makes most other ’phones sound mechanical.”—HerbReichert,Stereophile,June2016

Compared to the originalmodel, NightHawk Carbon boasts several acoustic, ergonomic, andcosmeticrefinements;addsasecondpairofearpads;andincludesamoreversatileanddurablecable, whileretainingitspredecessor’sexceedinglylowdistortion, unrivaledcomfort, andnaturallybeautifulsound.

Innovative Materials & Safe, Efficient Manufacturing

NightHawk’searcupsaremadefromarevolutionarymaterialcalled“LiquidWood”—actualwood thathasbeen combinedwith reclaimedplant fiber, heated, liquefied, andprocessedinsuchawaythatitcanbeinjectionmolded.Whileinjectionmoldingis commonly accomplished with environmentally hazardous plastics or syntheticpolymers,LiquidWood isanaturalmaterial—assustainableas it isphysicallybeautiful. Moreover, compared toordinaryplastic orwood, LiquidWoodhas farsuperior acoustic properties and provides a seemingly endless array of geometricpossibilities. InNightHawk,we’veusedLiquidWoodtoshapeourearcupstomorecloselyresemblethehumanear, therebyprovidingamorecompleteandcomfortablefit, reducingstressonthelistener’sheadandears.

ThesubtlylustroushueofNightHawkCarbon’searcupsisachievedbyemployingaprocesssimilartooneusedintheluxuryautomobileindustry.Severalprimercoatssetthefoundationuponwhichwe introducemultiplebasecoatsofCarbonGreyMetallichigh-glossautomotivepaint.Ontopofthis,weapplyseveralclearcoatsthatarethen instantlycuredbyUV light,beforeacarefulhandpolishingproducesahigh-glossfinish.Restassuredthatweuseonlyhigh-solidspaintswithminimalvolatileorganiccompounds—safefortheenvironmentaswellasthosewhoapplyit.

Driver Technology:BiocelluloseDiaphragm&Split-GapMotor

Manyoftoday’sheadphonesusediaphragmsmadefromMylar—aneasilysourced,inexpensive,lightweightplasticmaterial.Unfortunately,Mylarisinherentlyflimsyandbrittle,typicallydistortingastheaudiosignalreacheshighfrequenciesof6-10kHzandinvariablycausinglisteningfatigue.NightHawktakesaradicallydifferentapproach:Inspiredbytheadvanceddrive-unitsusedintoday’shigh-performanceloudspeakers,NightHawk’s 50mmhigh-excursion driver has a compliant rubber surround andapistonicdiaphragmmadeofbiocellolose—anextraordinarilypure,rigid,self-dampingmaterialfarmoreaccurateandmusicallypleasingthanMylar.Furthermore,NightHawk’suniquesplit-gapmotordesigndramaticallyreducesintermodulationdistortiontoprovidetight,clean,well-definedbassandaconvincinglyrealisticrepresentationofspace.Yourmusicsoundsclean,clear,large,andalive.

Anything But Ordinary: A Loudspeaker-Inspired Headphone Experience

ManyofNightHawk’sdesignelementsaresuccessfullyimplementedintoday’smostinnovativeloudspeakers, buthaveneverbeenusedinheadphones.Muchlikethe internal bracingof abeautiful loudspeaker cabinet,NightHawk’s sophisticatedearcupenclosureincorporatessupportbeamsthatenhancestructuralintegrityandminimizeunwanted resonancesandvibrations.Anelastomeric coating is carefullyappliedtotheenclosure’sinternalsurfacestofurtherreduceharmfulvibrations, whileadampingmaterialcomprisingapurposefulblendofwoolandpolyesterenablesanextraordinarilysmooth, natural frequencyresponse foradeeply immersiveandemotionallycompellinglisteningexperience.WithNightHawk,vibration-induceddistortionisintelligentlyminimized,allowingmusictobreathefreely.

Diamond Cubic Diffusion & 3D-Printing Technology

NightHawk is a semi-openheadphonewithabiomimeticgrille inspiredby theunderlyingstructureofbutterflywings—afascinatingdiamond-cubic latticeworkthatdiffuses lighttocreate iridescence.Builttoamuchlargerscale inNightHawk, the complex design of the grille’s intricate latticework diffuses sound and defeats the resonancesthatultimatelydistortanddamageourmusic.Fartoocomplextomachineormold,NightHawk’sgrillecanonlybecreatedthrough3Dprintingviaanadvancedformofadditivemanufacturingknownas“SelectiveLaserSintering.”NightHawkwasthefirstcompletelyoriginalproductionheadphonetousea3D-printedpart,and,likeitsforebear,NightHawkCarbonrepresentsbeauty,intelligence,andresponsibleinnovation.

Writingfor3DPrintingIndustry.com,ShaneTaylorsaidoftheoriginalNightHawk:“Thereisalmostnothingaboutthisheadphonethatsuggestsanythingotherthannearperfection…NightHawkshows3Dprintinginaction,whereadvancedmanufacturingprocessespushproductdesignalmosttohighart.”

Ergonomics: Removing the Barriers between Listener and Music

A successful ergonomic design removes unnecessary barriers between thelistener and his or her emotional involvement with the music. NightHawk’s flexible headband efficiently distributes the headphones’ weight, providing a feel that isboth comfortable and comforting—you’llwant towearNightHawk. Its simple yetintelligent, patent-pending suspension system allows the earcups tomove freely, accommodatingheadsofalmostanyshapeorsize, whileeffectivelydecouplingtheearcups to counteract resonances. NightHawk’s earpads (again shaped to resemble thehumanear)placegreater thickness toward the rearof thepad, thusprovidingadditionalcomfortwhere it’smostnecessary,simultaneouslysettingNightHawk’sdriversatanangleoptimizedforprecise,stableimaging.Youcanlistenforhours—incomfort,immersedinnaturallybeautifulsound,movedbythemusic.

ImpressedbythefitandoverallcomfortoftheoriginalNightHawk,VladSavovofTheVerge.comwrote:“Itis,inaword,sublime.Okay,anotherfewwords:sumptuous,luxurious,awesome.”

The NightHawk Cable

NightHawk Carbon benefits from AudioQuest’s 30+ years of experience in thehigh-performance cablebusiness, includingadurableheadphone cabledesignedto effectively control noise andminimize distortion, enabling a deeper emotionalconnection between listener and music. The cable’s conductors are made of high-purity copper that hasbeendrawnand castwith exceptional care to eliminate asmuch oxygen content as possible, thereby significantly reducing impurities in themetalthatwouldotherwiseexacerbatedistortion.Thecable’sflexiblejacketgreatlyreducesmicrophonics—theannoyinglyaudible rustlingor thumpingsounds thatoccur when headphone cables come into contact with external surfaces—and its rigorously testedstrain reliefensures longevity.Themicandsmartphonecontrolsallowthelistenertoacceptandmakephonecalls,or,ofcourse,play,pause,andselecttracks—andourcontrolcircuitryiskeptseparatefromtheaudiocircuitry,meaningthataudioqualityisnevercompromisedforconvenience.

This commitment to quality extends right down to the cable’s plugs, which usea basemetal of Tellurium Copper (TeCu), selected for its outstanding purity andsuperbmachinability.BecauseTeCu is fareasier tomachine thanothercommonlyusedvarietiesofcopper,wecanachieveamuchsmootherplugsurface,which,inturn,resultsinhigherplatingquality,bettercontactmating,and,mostimportantly,improvedsignaltransmission.Further,thecableitselfissupplementedbya3.5mm-to-1/4” adaptor that, like our finest cable connectors, features thick Direct-Silverplatingoverhigh-puritycopper;farfrommerelyfunctional,ouradaptor ismadetomeetthestandardsdefinedbyNightHawkitself.Indeed,everybitofNightHawkwasdesignedtoexudequality,performance,innovation,andbeauty.

NightOwl Around-the-Ear Closed-Back Headphones

Adirectdescendantofouraward-winningNightHawksemi-openheadphone,NightOwl improvesupon itspredecessor’soutstandingfitandfinish, refines itsoverallbeautyanddurability,andprovidesexceptionalisolationfromexternalsound.

Safety: ListenResponsiblyDonotuseNightHawkwhileoperatingavehicle,crossingthestreet,orduringanyactivitythatrequirescompleteattention.

Toavoidhearingdamage,makesurethatthevolumeonyourmusicplayeristurneddownbeforeconnectingNightHawk.AfterplacingNightHawkonyourhead,graduallyincreasetheplaybackvolumeuntilyou’vereachedacomfort-able listening level.

Sound levels are measured in A-weighted decibels (dBA). Extended exposure toanysoundatorabove85dBAcancausehearingloss.NightHawkhasbeenmeticulouslydesignedtodeliverlong-termlisteningsatisfaction.BecauseofNightHawk’suncommonlylowdistortionandhighpowerhandling,thepsychoacousticcuesthatwouldnormallyalertthelistenertopotential-lydamagingvolumelevelsarediminished.Therefore,youshouldcarefullymonitoryouruse.

Hearing loss is a function of loudness versus time: As loudnessincreases, thetimerequiredtodevelophearing loss decreases. Lower volume levels ensure safer listening over longer periods of time.

A Note from the Designer

The act of listening to music through headphones should be a singularly intimate and transcendentexperience. Though inmy designs I affectionatelyborrowfromtheworldofloudspeakertechnology, myquestistodeliveranexperiencethatcanonly be achieved through headphones.

Rather than attempting to recreate the loudspeaker-listening experience through a set of headphones,I’vejudiciouslyincorporatedelementsofloudspeakerdesign that honor the headphone-listening experience. While my designs are tailored to music loverswho, likeme, grewup listeningtoheadphones, Ihopethatmyworkwillalsoappealtotraditionalloudspeaker enthusiasts who crave even deeper immersion in music.

High-end headphones should allow the listener to become absolutely consumed by the experience.Comparedtothesoundofloudspeakersinatypicalroom, headphonescanprovideadramaticallylowernoise floor, affording unprecedented detail andclarity, significantly lower distortion, and imagingmarkedbyexceptionallyclearandpresentambiencecues. The result is a listening experience that is emotionallycompellingandseriously immersive.

Nothingbringsmeasmuchpleasureasmusic,andIsincerelyaspiretohelpyoufeelequallymovedbyitsbeauty.
