Kathryn Liston picks her four favourite golf courses in the Canary and Balearic islands
Son Vida, Palma, Majorca
The island’s oldest golf club is also one of its most beautiful with several layouts totalling 63 holes. Surrounded by the mighty Sierra de Tramontana, tree-lined fairways of carob, pine, almond and palm give way to stunning views over the Bay of Palma. The Son Vida course, designed by Fred Hawtree in 1964 and completely revamped in 2001, is possibly the best. Hilly and tight from the tees, wicked dog-legs and a tricky layout on the nal ve holes provide a challenge — but it’s the 18th with two dog-legs, two lakes and a stream that saves the best to last. Well almost. A well-deserved glass of iced sangria awaits golfers on the 19th. In addition to Son Vida, there are two other 18-hole courses here (Son Muntaner and Son Quint), a 9-hole layout, a golf academy and short-game practice area. With so much opportunity, most golfers want to stay close to the action and, as luck would have it, there’s a choice of three luxury on-site hotels: St Regis Mardavall, Castillo Hotel Son Vida, and Sheraton Mallorca Arabella. Green fee: From £68. www.sonvidagolf.com

Minty Clinch suggests some great short breaks in Scotland for golfers who like to keep their eye on the ball
Competitive streakScotland will host the Ryder Cup on the PGA Course at Gleneagles in 2014, which means 2013 is the year to play it before the pros. Jack Nicklaus designed the layout 20 years ago to complement the historic King’s and Queen’s courses, but the Cup’s requirements for dramatic risk-reward shots across water and an amphitheatre in which to stage a stadium finish have led to substantial changes being made to the 9th and 18th holes. On a recent visit to check them out, Nicklaus gave his seal of approval. ● Green fees: £65-£160. www.gleneagles.com ►
