Certain retail stores have recently been carrying different brands of “degradable” plastic bags; both on their shelves and as carry-out bags. The bags are labeled as: • bio-degradable • oxo-degradable • oxo-biodegradable Unfortunately, these bags are not the same as “compostable” bags and this has caused confusion as to which bags are acceptable in Valley green carts. The food waste that is collected from the green carts is used to make a rich soil called compost. When plastic bags that are not 100% compostable are sent to the compost facility via green carts, they contaminate the finished soil and also damage machinery at the compost facility. In the Valley Region, compostable bags which are marked with one of the following two logos, are accepted in the green carts. These logos certify that the bag meets industry standards for composting. Both the indi-vidual bags and the package will be marked with the logo. To help you, I’ve attached a hand-out with a vari-ety of bags that we accept and do not accept in the green carts. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us anytime.
