Addiction to Social Media and Smartphone Apps

Objectives of today’s session1) To increase awareness of addiction to social

media sites and phone applications e.g. Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

2) To empower you with coping strategies to cope with / help your friends cope with the addiction

3) To reflect on how to become a responsible user of social networking sites and pledge your commitment towards building a healthy cyber culture via youthchaNgE Buzz

How do you know if you are addicted to social networking sites and smartphone games?

You check your mentions, messages, retweets or post something on any of your social media accounts first thing when you wake up.

IT’S THE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING

YOU THINK IT’S WORSE TO LEAVE YOUR PHONE AT HOME THAN TO LEAVE YOUR

WALLET AT HOMEWhen you can’t leave your phone. It needs to be by your side all the time.

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO DO

• You feel bored and tired without your phone. There is no entertainment and there isn’t anything else to do.

• You repeatedly look at your phone when you are bored or while waiting for your food to be served at a restaurant.

A MUST

• You have to share everything you’re doing , where you are , who are you with on social networking sites like twitter, etc.

YOUR SCHOOLWORK IS AFFECTED

• You cannot seem to complete an hour of homework or studying without looking at your phone

SELF HELP AND SEEKING HELP

1. Track Your Time Online – The simplest way to ensure you aren’t wasting time in any one place is to monitor your time. Use a stopwatch and set a limit. When time is up, log out, regardless of what’s left. There is always tomorrow.

2. Remember the Telephone - A call to a friend works just as well as a Facebook message, and it is real human interaction, something you maybe losing touch with.

3. Go Outside – get away from your portal to the network. Get some sunshine, chances are you need it.

4. Use Your Networks Productively –use Twitter only to share and interact with people with similar interests as you. Do not follow or allow people to follow just because you want to increase the numbers

5. Prioritize - Use these tools only when your work has been done, or during down time. Don’t spend time updating your profile or changing your picture when there is work to be done. This will not only save you time and increase productivity, but will build self discipline as well.

6. Stop Procrastinating – Many times we get on Facebook or twitter when we have real work that we just don’t want to do. Stop that! Get the work done. Once you finish you’ll have all the time in the world to spend making friends on Facebook.

7. Remove the Cell phone Apps – You don’t really need Facebook or Twitter on your phone. Nothing on there can be that important. Save your social networking for when you are behind the desk and limit the distractions throughout the day.

8. Spend More Time With Close Friends and Family – You aren’t the only one who suffers when you spend countless hours on MySpace. et back to friends and family.

9. Avoid Denial: Do you spend over 5-6 hours surfing and clicking around different social media channels, or maybe even just one? Do you ignore doing other tasks or spending time with others? Is the first thing you do when you wake up is tweet and do you tweet right before you close your eyes?

10. Pick Up a New Hobby: If you find yourself spending too much time using social media channels, think about picking up and adopting a new hobby, preferably one which you can practice outdoors and away from your computer!

11. Don’t Compensate: Whether you are trying to get over a bad break up, avoiding something or running away from a family situation, do not compensate by using social media!

12. Buddy up: pair up with another friend to help each other combat excessive use. For example, during breaks, if you see your buddy start playing with the phone, tell him/her to stop.

Remind yourselves of your goals• You are in JC now and the ultimate goal you want to achieve is to obtain an A-Level Certificate worthy enough of you to enter the University course of your choice

• You do not want little distraction like these to affect your studies and therefore, reminding yourselves of your goals will allow you to be much more motivated and determined.
