Adjectives and Its Kinds

Adjectives•An adjective modifies

a noun or a pronoun by describing, identifying, or quantifying words. An adjective usually precedes the noun or the pronoun which it modifies.

Kinds of Adjectives

1. Descriptive adjectives- A. Common Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns; they give color, shape, size, quality etc. to the noun.

– Example:– Joshua is a talented guitarist.– Joshua wears a red shirt.

B. Proper adjectives- are adjectives that derive from proper nouns –Examples:– Joshua is a Filipino student.– Joshua’s Siberian Husky loves chasing cars.

2. Limiting adjectives- are articles and numbers. They set a limit through the ff: –Cardinal numbers- one, two, three–Ordinal numbers- first, second, third, fourth….

–Articles- A, an, the…..pertains to one item only.

• Examples:– Joshua loves his two guitars.–Playing the guitar is Joshua’s first love.

–The song “You’re a God” is Joshua’s favorite song.

3. Demonstrative Adjectives are used to point out or demonstrate a specific object. Ex: this, these, that and those.–Examples:–That guitar belongs to Joshua.–These songs are played by Joshua’s band.

Observe:• This milk is good for the health.

• This is my bag.

• These are big.

Observe:•That park is beautiful.

• That is my house.

4. Possessive Adjectives are used to show who owns or possesses something. Ex: my his, her, our, their, your and its–Example– Joshua is my student.–His expensive car was stolen.

• They are cleaning their room.

• Let me borrow your soap.

• The bird is flapping its wings.

5. Indefinite adjectives are Indefinite Pronouns used as adjectives: many, several, few, some, most –Examples–Few people are friends with Joshua.

–Most people love to see Joshua play the guitar.

Observe:• Some boys from this class

joined the basketball league.

• Each classroom has its own air conditioning unit.

• Some schools have no classes today.

• Any girl can dance like that.
