The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation is to develop significant resources for basic & applied health programs with emphasis on canine genetics to improve the quality of life for dogs & their owners.
• AKC CHF, a 501(c)3, the largest foundation in the world to fund exclusively canine health studies
• More than $22M has been allocated to date funding over 500 studies to help dogs live longer, healthier lives
• AKC CHF provided impetus and $2M seed money for the initial canine genome mapping
• Donor Advised Funds – set up to restrict donations to a particular breed or disease
• AKC CHF and Purina sponsor biennial Canine Health Conference featuring renowned speakers on breakthrough canine health research and treatments
• Genome Barks – audio podcasts on canine health research, advances in veterinary healthcare, and breeding management

The Canine Health Information
Center (CHIC)
CHIC – The Canine Health Information Center
• Jointly sponsored by the AKC CHF and the OFA
• MISSION: To provide a source of health information for owners, breeders, and scientists, that will assist in breeding healthier dogs
• Initiated in 2001 as pilot program with 8 participating breeds, today over 130 breed parent clubs participate and over 60,000 dogs have met the individual breed requirements and been assigned CHIC numbers
CHIC
CHIC is about encouraging health testing and awareness
In short, CHIC…– Establishes a breed specific health screening
protocols– Collects health test results from multiple sources– Makes the results available in an online publicly
accessible database– Recognizes those dogs that have been tested in
accordance with a test protocol recommended by the breed’s Parent Club
CHIC DNA Repository
CHIC DNA Repository
• MISSION– The CHIC DNA Repository, co-sponsored
by the OFA and the AKC CHF, collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding Genealogic and Phenotypic information to facilitate future research
CHIC DNA Repository
• OBJECTIVES– Facilitate more rapid research progress by
expediting the sample collection process– Provide researchers with optimized family groups
needed for research– Allow breeders to take advantage of future DNA
based disease tests as they become available– Foster a team environment between breeders and
the research community improving the likelihood of genetic discovery
CHIC DNA Repository• 10,000+ dogs• 150 breeds, 25+ breeds with 100+ samples• Examples of Sample Distribution To Date
– GR – Mast Cell Tumor (MIT/Harvard)– Cancer (Van Andel Research Institute)– BX, GS – Degenerative Myelopathy (U of MO)– PR – Hyperuricosuria (UC Davis)– IR – HOD (Clemson)– NF/GR/GSE – Hip Dysplasia (Cornell)– MF – Cystinuria (U of Pennsylvania)– SH – Cataracts (Animal Health Trust – UK)– Monorchid/Cryptorchid (Iowa State)
CHIC DNA Repository
• DNA Collection Clinics– OFA underwrites 50% of the DNA banking
fees for blood based DNA collection clinics at National Specialties
– OFA underwrites 100% of the DNA banking fees for dogs with significant genetic diseases
–More than 50 breeds have sponsored collection clinics
– Recognition of donors through bandanas, buttons, etc
Parent Club Health & Welfare Foundations
Creative Thinking
• ASC requires CHIC numbers on sires/dams in order to futurity nominate
• DCAF contributes additional $ to the futurity winners if sire/dam have CHIC numbers
• Pharoah Hound Club requires completion of health survey to renew membership
• Proactive collections for targeted research efforts– DM Bladders Stones, DP Dilated Cardio
Myelopathy
