TheplanningcommitteehopesthatyourstayhereinEntebbeispleasant,andthattheinstitute’sworkisfruitfulandbeneficialforyou.Manypeoplehaveplayedapartinplanningthisevent,andtheirgenerosityandhardwork,coordinatingacrosscontinents,havebroughtustothesedays.Theroadherehashadchallenges,aspoliticaluncertaintiesinKenyaforcedustoshifttheeventfromNairobitoEntebbe.BoththeorginalhostsatHekimaCollegeandourcurrenthostsatUgandaMartyrsdeservegreatthanks.

Institute BackgroundThisInstituteisaresponsetorecommendationsdevelopedattheConferenceoftheCatholicEpis-copateoftheGreatLakesRegionforPeaceandReconciliation,whichwasheldinBurundiOctober19-21,2010,andwhichwerefurtherdevelopedintheProposalforResearchinEducationforPeace,whichwasapprovedbytheGeneralAssemblyoftheAssociationofCatholicUniversitiesandHigherInstitutesofAfricaandMadagascar(ACUHIAM)in2014.
TheFinalDeclarationfromtheOctober2010conference,whichwassignedbyArchbishopSimonNtamwana(Gitega,Burundi),PresidentoftheAssociationofEpiscopalConferencesofCentralAfrica(ACEAC),andBishopEmmanuelObbo(Soroti,Uganda),DelegateofthePresidentoftheAssocia-tionofMemberEpiscopalConferencesinEasternAfrica(AMECEA),identified“threerelatedcross-cuttingchallenges:underutilizationandinsufficientawarenessoftheChurch’suniquepotentialtopromotepeaceandreconciliation;thelackofpertinentinformationontheunderlyingcausesofourproblems;andinsufficientcoordinationoftheChurch’sinitiativesforpeaceandreconciliation.”Morespecifically,thisInstituterespondstotheDeclaration’scallforinitiatives“topromotesynergybe-tweentheinstitutionsoftheCatholicChurchintheregionbywayofaclosecollaborationbetweenuniversities,researchcenters,JusticeandPeaceCommissions,variouslevelsofCaritas,[and]socialcommunicationsservices.”
