Summary -

Bellwork: Set up page 15 of your journal for the Agar Lab today

Science Fact of the Day:With more than 80,000 arms, the Basket Starfish has the greatest number of arms.

CHAMPs: Lab (review)• C: Students may have conversations about the

lab with partners• H: Read lab instructions thoroughly first, then

ask a teacher• A: Follow lab instructions and lab safety rules• M: Remain with your lab group and at your lab

station ONLY• P: Work as a team. Complete all parts of the lab

Part 1 procedure1. Obtain a 3 cm and a 2 cm agar block from

your teacher.2. Submerge all three cubes in NaOH solution.

Use caution with sodium hydroxide - it is caustic. It will burn your skin or clothes. WEAR GOGGLES AT ALL TIMES!!!!

3. Allow the cubes to soak for 10-15 minutes.

While we wait for 15 minutes, let’s review our quiz from Friday

–IS IT 2 E’s make 1 P?

Set this table up on page 14 of your journal. Leave room for analysis questions

Length of side (cm)

Surface area (cm2)

Volume (cm3) S/V ratio

1 2 3 4 5

10

1. Which cube has the greatest surface area? Volume? S/V ratio? 2. What happens to the surface area as the cubes get larger? 3. What happens to the volume as the cubes get larger? 4. What happens to the S/V ratio as the cubes get larger?

Agar Lab part 24. After 10-15 minutes, pour the NaOH down the

sink and rinse the cubes with water. Do not pour the agar cubes out of the beaker. WEAR GLOVES AND GOGGLES UNTIL YOU’RE DONE WITH STEP 6

5. Remove the agar cubes from the beaker with a spoon, and blot them dry with a paper towel.

6. With a knife, cut the agar cubes in half and measure the depth of the colored area in cm.

7. Clean up: Diamond = return goggles, Spade = fold and put away aprons, Heart = clean counter/throw away paper towels, Club = make sure supplies are left for next period like you found them

Analysis questions: page 14 of your journal

1. What do you notice about the agar cubes as they increase in size?

2. What happens to the cell’s ability to feed itself and get rid of wastes as it grows?

3. If the sodium hydroxide were some vital substance, such as food, and the agar cubes were cells, which cell would be fed the most efficiently?

4. Explain why cells are so small.
