SME Instrument 2018-2020 – What’s New?

1. Full bottom-up selection approach pre-defined topics removed

2. Overhaul of the submission forms simplified + more business-oriented

3. Pool of expert-evaluators evaluators with investor profile has been significantly increased

4. Face-to-face interviews with selected Phase 2 applicants best and most disruptive innovation ideas pass the cut

SME Instrument – 6 lessons learnt Too much focused on the project and not enough on the business

opportunity.

Not convincing when describing the company (you have to explain why your company will succeed and not your competitor).

Not providing enough information on competing solutions.

Having a too low level of innovation, planning to develop a product that already exists on the market.

Proposing just an idea without any concept for its commercialisation.

Just trying their luck (the SME Instrument is not a lottery!).

Lessons learned

Foundational: Know you overall objectives, what will you achieve with the funding?1. Patience, third try phase two2. Actively seek for feedback and listen carefully3. Precision, be precise. If you are good it´s all about the tenths!

Tips and trixUse a external writer: - It takes time and focus ( that you don´t have)- If you can explain to a external resource, the probability that the EU evaluators will

understand increases- Focus on the evaluation criteria, not on how good you think you are
