AichiisaJapaneseprefectureincentralHonshuIslandandanareaknownasatopproducerforfarmedeel.EelisaverypopularfoodinJapan,withthehigheatingseasoninthesummermonths.In2015,inordertoincreaseproductivityandreduceenergycosts,NagasakaYouman(NagasakaEelFarm)inNishioCity,engagedAnzaiKantetsutoinstallitspatentedNanobubbletechnology.

Oneofthebiggestproblemsfacingtheeelfarmingindustryislossofstock,or‘farmingloss’.Farminglossisgenerallymadeupofacombinationofmortalityandundersizedstock.Fromtheeelsthatsurvive,around70%reachaweightsuitableformarket,leaving30%toosmallforsale.Thisundersizedstockisusuallydisposedofbyfarmersbecauseitcantakeuptofourmoreyearsforthesesmallereelstogrowtomarketsizeandonlythenwiththeassistanceofgrowthhormonechemicals.

NagasakaYouman’sbusinessisunusualbecauseitisafarmthatcollectstheseundersizedeelsfromaround300othereelfarms,andoverthefollowingyearsnurturesthemtoasizewheretheycanbesold.Historically,thefarmoperatedasystemthatcontinuouslypulledlocalseawaterintothefacilityandthendischargedittokeeptheeeltankwaterclean.Eelsaremoreoilythanotherfish,sooilfromtheirbodiesfilledthewaterbeingdischargedandcausedfrequentfilterblockagesinthesystem,resultinginconstantmaintenance.Aseelsprefertoliveinwarmwater,thetankwateralsoneedstobewarmedbyoilpoweredheaters,sotheconstantdischargeofoilywaterwasinefficient,costlyandbadfortheenvironment.ThefirstimprovementwastheintroductionofanRAS(RecirculatedAquacultureSystem)thatstopstheneedtodischarge.However,thissystemrequiresamethodofcleaningthewaterbefore/asitisrecirculated.ThesolutiontothischallengewastouseAnzai’sNanobubbletechnologykeepsthewaterrichinoxygen,cleananderadicatestheneedforaproteinskimmer.

TheNagasakaEelFarmfacilityTheusualfarmingcycle/periodtobringeelstomarketisaroundtenmonths.Forundersizedeels,itcantakeuptofouryears.AftertheintroductionofAnzai’sNanobubbles,theordinaryeelswereofamarketablesizeinonlyfourmonthsandtheundersizedeelsgrewtomarketsizeintenmonths.What’smore,therewasalsoareductiononfeedcosts.BeforetheintroductionofAnzai’sNanobubbles,Nagasaka’sfarminglosswas17%.Thiswasmadeupof11%mortalityand6%oftheeelsbeingtoosmallformarket.OnceAnzai’sNanobubblesystemwasfullyoperational,themortalityratereducedfrom11%to6%andtheunder-sizedstockreducedfrom6%to2%givinganoverallbreedinglossreductionfrom17%to8%,animprovementofalmost53%.

Whatisevenmoreimpressiveisthatthiswasachievedatthesametimeasanincreaseinthebiomass(density/breedingnumbers)inthetankswhichisnowfivetimesgreaterthanpreviouslyfarmed.

Anzai100A/SIn-LineNanobubbleUnit

TheNanobubbleunitusedforthisprojectwasthe100A/SIn-LineNanobubblegeneratorwhichdelivers20litresofgasperminutewithawaterflowofupto1.5m3perminute.Inadditiontotheincreaseinthenumberofeelsbeingproducedandthehealthandqualityofthestock,theothermainobjectiveofintroducingAnzai’sNanobubbletechnologywastoreducecosts.Onthisfront,savingsmadeonheatingthewaterweretheequivalentof350,000litresofheavyoilperyearresultinginasavingof28,000,000Japaneseyen(aroundUS$250,000or£200,000).SavingsontheemissionsofCO2wasaround950tonsoverthesameperiod.Thismeansthatforeacheeltherewasasavingsof80%oftheheavyoilpriceand25%oftheelectricitycosts.

Undersizedeelsgrowtomarketsizeinstandardtimewithouttheuseofchemicals.

Conclusion:NagasakaYoumanwontheAichiEnvironmentalAward2019,usingAnzaiKantetsu’sNanobubbleTechnology,whichachievedthefollowingheadlineresults:-

• BreedingDensity =5timeshigher• FuelCosts =80%less(pereel)• ElectricityCosts =25%less(pereel)• BreedingLosses =(-17%)to(-8%)reducedby53%• Sedimentation =75%less
