Whom do you seek first ?

You!

3 Instructor’s advice

Typical advice

1. On Berthing / Unberthing 1) Inappropriate use of tug/thruster when departing the wharf under strong wind (estimation of power) 2) Inappropriate turning in front of the wharf (estimation of distance)

3) Near miss to the buoy in harbor (estimation of wind, lee way)

Typical advice

2. On Navigation

1) Inappropriate course selection (prediction of traffic) 2) Near miss to other vessels (prediction of intention) 3) Inappropriate speed in the traffic route

- Examples of instruction -

Let’s “ Replay ”scenes of each case

Case 1 “Excessive turning” in harbour

Case 2 “Coming close” in bay

Case 1 “Excessive turning” in harbour

- Instruction - 1) The higher speed remaining, the longer tactical diameter, when the vessel being turning

2) The shorter under keel clearance (by deep draft), the longer tactical diameter (by underwater mass effect)

3) Consideration to the narrow shape of the vessel

4) Delay of tug’s preparation and decline of its effect

Case 2 “Coming close” in bay

- Instruction -

1) Ensuring and check of the VHF communication between vessel to vessel

2) Compliance of traffic law

3) Action for the prevention and avoidance of collision
