Knowledgeable is one of our core values at Al Zahra College and one of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Being knowledgeable means that students explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In doing so, they acquire in-depth
knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines. We encourage all of our students to be caring at home and at school. Weekly awards are presented to
students who demonstrate Learner Profile attributes.

REGIONAL X COUNTRYHaving just missed out on making the ASISSA Regional team to compete at the NSW Independent Schools Championships, Rayanne finished 7th in the 8/9Years Girls division at the recent regional championships. Congratulations, Rayanne, on maing it to State in 2011. All members of the AZC performed well to ensure our best year at regional cross country. Th hard luck story in 2011 belongs to Zak Nasour who missed out by one place in going to state! Well done!
AZC BLAZERSStudents must wear college blazers to and from AZC in Terms 2 and 3.
READY TO LEARNIt is absolutely essential that
students arrive at school, ready to learn. This won’t happen if students do not have adequate sleep (10-12 hours, depending on age) or have unhealthy eating habits.
If parents don’t have these two factors right, then learning and personal achievement will be a ‘hit or miss’ affair.
PaymentsParents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC.
The reason for this procedure is twofold:
- AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and
- AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment.
AZC appreciates your cooperation in this matter.

PRIMARY STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTS
At Al Zahra College, feedback on student progress is given to par-ents through Student Reports at the end of each semester (Terms 2 and 4). In 2011 PYP Unit of Inquiry reports will be included each semester, rather than at the end of each unit.
To comply with government requirements our Student Reports will:
• be provided at least twice per year;• be timely;• deal with academic and non – academic learning;• be in plain language to be readily understood by parents
and guardians;• be confidential;• maintain the privacy of students;• be followed by opportunity for discussion between the
child, parents/guardians and teachers;• give constructive advice about supporting the child’s
further progress at school;• include for each subject studied, an assessment grading
of A, B, C, D or E, clearly designed against specific standards: The NSW Board of Studies common grade scale. (Note that Pre-School reports will have their own grading method); and
• include the child’s achievement relative to the achievement of the child’s peer group at the school.
For students undertaking standard assessment in reading, writ-ing, spelling and numeracy in Years 3 and 5, the semester 2 re-port will include:
• the result of that assessment against appropriate na-tional benchmarks;
• the result of that assessment against achievement levels or bands; and
• the average achievement of the child’s peer group at the school against achievement levels or bands.
If you would like any further information, please come and see Dr David McGregor.
COLLEGE UNIFORMParents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands).
There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants.
Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing.
NUT FREE ZONE
Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Kindergarten in 2011, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods containing nuts in the school.
This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut prod-ucts, and anything containing tree nuts.
Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone.
Thank you in advance for your complete support.
