Panoramic shot of the approach to Hills Head Farm.  The site was selected apparently because Grandmother Alexander was tired of searching for a new home and this spot reminded her of Scotland‐ hilly and rocky.  Norris Buttes are in the background‐ named after Lt. Norris of the NWMP who used to camp up there to watch the gun and liquor runners coming up from the US. 

Rebecca’s  memories of Grandma Alexander:Whenever I think of her I can almost taste the huge plum pudding that she made every Christmas.  She put the fruit etc. In a 100 lb. flour sack, tied up the corners, and cooked it in the copper boiler of boiling water and kept at boiling temperature for four hours.  It was served with sauce.  Yum yum good.Her rocking chair was in front of the cookstove and many hours she spent there knitting dresses for her granddaughters, as well as sweaters, long stockings, scarves, and  mittens for all the grandchildren. 

Aunt Kate, Florence, Jim, and Isabella and I spent the winter holidays, which lasted from Christmas to the end of February, at Grandma’s.Grandma tried to teach me to sew by hemming tea towels and hankies.  In 1936 she had, as usual, a very good garden and often sent us muskmelons.  There was a lot of rust on the grain that fall.I am sure Isabella and Florence and perhaps Esther could tell you how wonderful our grandma was.  She was short, pleasantly plump, and had red hair.

LARRY AND SYLVIA (ROBINSON) COGHLIN.   We were married December 30, 1985.  We are presently living in Assiniboia.  Larry continues to work at the Poplar River Power Plant in Coronach.  Sylvia subs in the public school system, teaches occasional classes and invigilates exams for Southeast College, and tutors students.  We continue to work on our house, which we moved from Coronach to Assiniboia in 2003, and our yard (which we couldn’t).

JAMES COGHLIN (b. 1987) graduated May 2009 with a Bachelor of Piano Performance from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota.  This fall he plans to move to Montreal to work and continue his piano studies.

BEN COGHLIN (B. 1988) is presently living and working in Kingston, Ontario.  He continues to enjoy playing guitar, reading and sports.  Ben is the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ biggest fan east of Saskatchewan.

REBECCA ANN COGHLIN (B. 1991).  Rebecca keeps busy with school, violin, piano and her very large Great Pyrenees puppy.  She teaches Sunday School during the year.  This summer she attended a String Camp, a Writing Workshop, is counselling at Camp Woodboia, and attempting to earn her Bronze Cross in swimming.

Catherine Ewart (Robinson)Rebecca Robinson’s (Alexander) youngest daughter Catherine Mary Ewart (Robinson) was Born March 3rd 1960 in Assiniboia Saskatchewan. On October 6th 1984 Catherine married Ronald William Ewart. They were blessed with three children: Ryan Sinclair, Amy Catherine, and Sarah Evelyn. Ryan was born on December 20th 1985 in Assiniboia Saskatchewan. He is presently employed at Robinson Residential Design in Regina. He enjoys curling, football, and going to Saskatchewan Roughrider games. Amy was born on May 26th 1988 in Regina Saskatchewan. She is presently employed at Meyers Norris Penny in Moosomin Sask. She is planning to further her education in accounting. She enjoys walking her dog Ginger, and traveling. Sarah was born on March 21st 1997 in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. She is going into grade 7 at Assiniboia Elementary School. She enjoys playing with her animals and cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Ron, Cathy and Sarah have been residing on a grain farm just 3 miles West and 2 miles North of Assiniboia. Ron recently retired from the Assiniboia Union Hospital and is now farming full time with his brother. Cathy recently graduated from the Continuing Care Assistant program. She is employed at Ross Payent nursing Home and Assiniboia Union hospital.

Hills Head Farm 1950 ish

Growing up on Hills Head Farm. Plenty of space to roam, our uncles farm just a skip and a hop down the hill and opportunities for full use of active imaginations.

Oro Lake was a popular recreation spot long before it become a provincial park.  We changed in our cars with towels  in the windows as curtains.  James Alexander particularly liked it as he felt it was healing for his skin.  We especially enjoyed it when the Ursus were there.  Violet made the tastiest sweet buns.

Janet retired from Saskatoon City Hospital and lives independently in Saskatoon. She maintains an interest in learning and travel.

Jeanne Alexander (B. Ed.) retired from a long and successful career as a teacher and principal and currently lives in Regina. Active in the community she has a radio show, a TV show, and takes an active leadership role in numerous community organizations. As part of the Wascana Writers group she has published several stories and poems rooted in the Saskatchewan experience. Mary Hohne, her daughter and her grandsons James and Daniel also live in Regina. Jeanne was widowed in 2005.

Uncle Sandy and kids: a natural.  Alexa remembers Uncle Sandy as one of her favourites because he was so comfortable to be with.  A kid could just cuddle up, be comfortable, watch TV and not be expected to talk.

James Benjamin Briggs (b. 1974) Living in Ottawa working as a Network Security Analyst.  Helps his dad with the bronze casting foundry as well as art and farm projects.   Is starting to explore his creative side and just completed his first bronze sculpture.  

Alexa Janet Briggs (b.1976) and partner Niklas Carlsson.  Alexa completed her Masters in Interdisplinary Studies at the U of S and has been working as the Funding Programs Manager for the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation.  She’s in the process of moving to Calgary where Niklas is doing postdoctoral research in Computer Science.

Gary (B.SC.) and Geri (B.ED, MCE) reside in Ottawa on an acreage where Gary sculpts, and engages in other creative projects while Geri gardens and raises organic fowl.  They both work for the Government of Canada.
