Overview of Aggreko

• Scottish based company with global coverage• Revenue 2015 - £1.561B• Trading profit 2015 - £270M• Employees - 7,300• Operation Centres - 270• Operating Countries - 100 +• Aggreko manufacturing based in Dumbarton

2

Background to Solution

• Aggreko supplied Power and Load packages to commission Renewables Projects for many years.

• Started in North America with onshore wind, UK in 2009.• Work mainly with equipment manufacturers and developers• Options

– LV supply to keep turbines healthy.– LV static commissioning– HV keeping multiple turbines healthy from single connection

point. – HV rotational commissioning at each turbine.– HV rotational commissioning at single connection point with

multiple turbines running.

3

Reduced risk to projects

• Possibility of missing the subsidy reduction deadli nes• Developers / Investors

– Reduction / removal of subsidy for the lifetime of project.– Cancellation of whole project due to financial constraints.– Reduced return on investment.– Need to keep turbines healthy and preserve warranty.

• Manufacturers / Contractors– Substantial financial claims / penalties– Loss of customer confidence.– Cancellation of orders– Reduced order pipeline.– Difficulty matching resources to a delayed project time line. 4

Commissioning Solutions

1) Low voltage solution to do basic commissioning and keep turbines healthy.

2) High voltage solution from central point to enable static commissioning to be completed and keep all turbines healthy.

3) High voltage solution to offer full rotational commissioning of the turbines a) At the base of each turbine b) From a central connection point.

3b offers the most flexible solution. All turbines can be powered up and multiple turbines can be tested simultaneously.

5

Solution advantages

• Install on time / early to match resources to project deadline.• Enable commissioning phase during peak wind periods.• Removal of project bottlenecks to ensure no penalties.• Testing and commissioning on target – even when grid is

delayed.• Keep turbines healthy until grid is connected.• Confidence for developers to invest.• Confidence that project deadlines can be met.• Keep commissioning team on site to complete the process.• Can enable stage payments to be made.• Revenue generation as soon as grid is connected.

Grid outages or equipment failure

• O&M phase– Planned or unplanned grid outages, equipment can be kept

healthy from the site HV network enabling maintenance, preservation of warranty and early resumption of power export to grid.

• Failure of transformers or switchgear– Failure of turbine transformer – no export from single turbine.– Failure of export transformer

• no export of power from site• no power to turbine ancillaries.

• Replacement equipment is available to enable business continuity and earn revenue.

• Contingency plans can be provided for your sites

Wind Farm, Scotland33kV high voltage power connected at the main sub-station and load solution to simulate a full grid connection supply. Our solution enabled both static and rotational commissioning of the turbines, protection of the electrical components, preservation of the turbine warranties and kept the project on course. All from one central connection point.

Innovation – Auto load control(Solar and Wind)

• Manual load matching to Solar output almost impossible• Large power package required to match the solar

generation output.• Load applied to generators from loadbank to match the

likely output from the solar array.• Fuel burn large during periods of low solar output.• Wind Farms, due to their slower ramp rate, are more

manageable under manual operation but require manpower to control.

• Fuel and manpower are significant costs to a commissioning project.

18

Solution

• Auto load control!• Aggreko have developed an automated load control system for

their commissioning solutions• Can control the fast ramp rate of a solar farm and the slower

ramp rate of a wind farm.• Can be used equally on small scale or large scale projects.• Can be used on other technologies, wave, tidal, etc.• Can also be used to control grid export power under a limited

grid point connection.

Benefits

• Keeps power package to a minimum – lower rental costs.• Keeps fuel burn to a minimum – lower fuel costs.• Runs automatically – after commissioning requires minimum

manual intervention – lower manpower costs• System stability improved• Load ramping can be matched to suit technology• If high number of turbines and hence large ancillary load,

turbine(s) can be run to reduce load on generator to supply the base load.

• Results in a cost effective commissioning solution!
