GRAPHING QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS

• A quadratic function has the form • Where a is not equal to 0. The graph of a quadratic

function is U-shaped and is called a parabola. The parabola opens up if a > 0 and opens down if a < 0. The parabola is wider than the graph of and narrower than the graph of

• The x-coordinate of the vertex is –b/2a.• The axis of symmetry is the vertical line • x=-b/2a.

GRAPHING QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS

• VERTEX & INTERCEPT FORMS OF A QUADRATIC FUNCTION.

• VERTEX FORM: The vertex is (h, k), The axis of symmetry is x = h.

• INTERCEPT FORM: The x-intercept are p and q. The axis of symmetry is halfway between (p, 0) and (q, 0).

• For both forms, the graph opens if a > 0 and opens down if a < 0.

STANDARD FORM OF A POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION & END BEHAVIOR;

• The standard form of a polynomial function arranges the terms by degree in descending numerical order. The degree of a polynomial function affects the shape of its graph and determines the maximum number of turning points, or places where the graph changes direction. It also affects the end behavior, or the directions of the graph to the far left and to the far right. [See page 282 example]
