When the First World War broke out in 1914 there were about 2000 people living on the Tasman peninsula. 144 men and women from the peninsula enlisted and of those 42 died. Virtually none of those who returned had not been wounded or suffered mentally and physically as a result of the war years. The legacy of the war was painful and it endured.

In this commemoration the stories of the men and women who left to fight in World War I, and of the men, but mostly women, who coped without them, are told in different ways. The centre piece is an exhibition in the school hall, but there are many other parts to the programme. Not My Son, a play specially written for the occasion by Sue Benner will be performed in the Community Library and students from Tasman District School will demonstrate their electronic database Our Local Heroes. These stories and more are told in Chronicle 18, which will be launched at the opening of the exhibition. All this, on Saturday, to the accompaniment of songs of the period, from the Hobart Veterans Brass Band. On Sunday there will be concerts from the Australian Army Band. During the weekend there will be presentations related to the exhibition in the school hall. Refreshments, courtesy of the Rotary Club, will also be available.

The exhibition is presented in three parts. In the first realm you will find our Local heroes collection. The stories of the twenty-nine men from Nubeena who lost their lives in the service of their nation. The second realm, Back on the Farm, develops a number of themes related to the many men and women from the peninsula who enlisted and went to war and what happened to them on their return. The third realm, Keeping the Home Fires Burning, looks at life on the Peninsula in both World Wars.

Every family would have known someone who went to the war and every family would have known of the pain and suffering of those whose sons did not return. The social and economic impact of the Great War on the peninsula was profound and our exhibition explores those impacts. We hope to see you over the three days and would like to learn from you. We have established a data base which we will use to host our records and we will add to this over the years. The Tasman Peninsula Historical Society meets on the second Monday of each month.
