All organisms have the same basic needs:

Food Water Air Shelter

Producers “Photosynthesis”are organisms that make their own food by using the sun’s energy, water and carbon dioxide to make oxygen and glucose.Example: Plants

3 groups: based on how organisms obtain their food

Consumers “Eat”are organisms that consume (eat) producers and other consumers to get energy.

Examples: Animals

Decomposers “Break Down”are organisms that break down dead matter or animal wastes to get energy.Examples: Fungus and Bacteria

Cells are made up of 70% water

Water is obtained from the fluids you drink and the food

you eat.

FACT: Water is so vital to our metabolism that we could only survive about three days without it.

Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, NitrogenMost living things need oxygen for the

chemical processes that release energy from food.

“Photosynthesis”

6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2

Plants, Algae and some Bacteria use carbon dioxide to make oxygen.

Light Energy

“Cellular Respiration”

C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP

Animals on land and in water use oxygen to make

carbon dioxide.

All organisms need a place to Live, whether in a large amount of space or on a single pore on the tip of your nose.

“Protection”

Organisms often compete with each other for nutrients, living space and access to water and sunlight when the organism’s environment is limited.

1 Plants are known as __________ because of the way they obtain food.

B producers

2 Which of the following living things is a producer?

H an alga

Necessities Of Life Mini Assessment

3 Like most other organisms, your body is about ____________ water.

C 70%

4 How long can humans survive withoutdrinking water or other water-rich

drinks?

G three days

5 In addition to making food, the process of photosynthesis makes

B oxygen

6 What part of air is most critical for photosynthesis?

H carbon dioxide

7 Because the amount of ____________ on Earth is limited, organisms oftencompete for resources.

B space8 Which of the following is NOT a

basic need of all living things?

F sunlight

9 A ______________ obtains food by eating other organisms.

A consumer

10 Bacteria are known as _____________ becauseof the way they obtain food.

H decomposers
