Aluminum

Physical

• Aluminum is a relatively

• soft

• durable

• lightweight

Appearance ranging from silvery to dull grey, depending on the surface roughness.

A fresh film of aluminum serves as a good reflector of light and infrared radiation.

Aluminum has about one-third the density and stiffness of steel.

Aluminum is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion.

It is not soluble in water.

How is aluminum made?

How much do we save by recycling aluminium?

• Recycling aluminum saves 90-95 percent of the energy needed to make aluminum from bauxite ore.

• Recycling 33 aluminum cans saves about 7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. With the energy it takes to make just ONE aluminum can from bauxite ore, you can make 20 recycled aluminum cans.

• The energy saved by recycling one aluminum can is enough to power a television set for three hours.

Ideas to increase aluminum recycling!

• People need more information about the benefits of aluminum recycling.

• More containers where to put aluminum cans that can be recycled.

• Open more places, where people can hand in aluminum, so aluminum recycling would be more accessible.

Amount of energy needed to produce aluminum?

Four tons of bauxite is needed to produce 1 ton of aluminum.

About 6.2 kWh (kilowatt-hours) of electricity is required to produce 1 pound of aluminum from alumina.

How long can it last?

There are a lot of different answers floating around , but the most common answer is -

•it takes the average can 80-100 years to decompose.

•But, the recycling process takes only 6 weeks!
