Amalfi Coast & Puglia, Italy
May 16 - 24, 2017: 9 days, 8 nights
Our objective is to create ultimate Kosher travel experiences.
On the May 2017 Southern Italy tour, we stay in 3 bases; Sorrento for 3 nights, Capri for Shabbat (2 nights) and finally for 3 nights in Puglia.
For the first 3 nights in Sorrento
you can choose between our
private villa “Il Gioiello” (where all our meals will be served) or
the adjacent 5* Grand Hotel
Ambasciatori.
In Capri we will be staying in the outstanding 5* Hotel
Tiberio Palace, with its kosher
restaurant, and in Puglia, once
again, in the fabulous 5* Masseria Torremaizza.
Overview On this tour you will see the Amalfi Coast from all three perspectives – land, sea and “air”. We’ll drive along much of the spectacular coast road, we’ll sail along the coast and we’ll take the fabulous “Path of the gods” hilltop hike and see the coast from above ….as if from the air!! If you’re a serious cyclist, you can also cycle through the mountains from
Sorrento to Amalfi. Heard of Vietri pottery? We’ll see it at the source when we stop at Vietri-sul-Mare. Of course we’ll be in elegant Positano and, capital of the coast, in Amalfi. We’ll climb up the hill to enjoy the grandeur of hilltop Ravello, famous for its concerts, its villas and their gardens. And then there’s Pompeii. August 24th will never be the same again after you hear from your fascinating professional guide what happened in 79AD, the year Vesuvius erupted. And the area boasts 3 of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world at Paestum, dating from the time of the first Bet HaMikdash!! Let’s not forget the boat-ride to Capri, with the sun in your face and sea breeze in your
hair, which prepares you for a couple of days of magic on that most romantic island, where the chair-lift to heaven is just one of the ways to enjoy the island to the full. Moving south east to Puglia, we will visit Trani, with its shul and Jewish museum alongside the gorgeous harbour, Lecce with its unique rococo architecture and Jewish past, Alberobello famous for its trulli houses, the UNESCO protected mysterious Castel del Monte, a museum dedicated to the Jewish DP camp in Santa Maria al Bagno, the white town of Ostuni and leave time to enjoy the facilities of our magnificent hotel, the 5* Masseria Torremaizza.
Itinerary (subject to changes – we are talking about Italy!!)
Arrival day – Tuesday
May 16th, Naples Airport (NAP) Pls
arrive 11.00h – 13.00h
NB: If there is a
demand, we may, as previously, run a bus
from Rome airport) From the airport, we drive
to Pompeii for a guided
tour of this incredible,
unique archeological site.
Did you know that there is
evidence that Roman Jews believed that the eruption
of Vesuvius and the huge
destruction caused thereby
resulted from the Romans’ destruction of the 2nd Bet
Mikdash just 9 years
previously in Jerusalem???
We then head to our Villa for our Welcome Dinner while your luggage is delivered to your
room.
Wednesday May 17th
Amalfi Coast by boat – from Sorrento we’ll board
a ferry and enjoy the
magnificent views as we sail around the end of the
Sorrento peninsula,
passing Positano on our
way to Amalfi
Amalfi – we’ll stroll around
this busy little town, look at the church and its art
(for those who so wish) or
browse in the stores and “live the life”. There is also
a lovely museum of paper-
making at the end of the
village which was probably owned by Jews... 1000+ years ago.
Ravello – a bus will take us to the “high-point” of the coast with its breath-taking Villa
Cimbrone gardens and views. From Ravello we’ll drive back to Sorrento for dinner.
Thursday May 18th
Vietri-sul-Mare - we’ll stop for an hour or so
you can look at the home-town of these world-famous ceramics, and then head to…
Paestum – after lunch, we’ll enjoy a guided
tour of the world's best preserved Greek Temples (yes Greek – from the time when the
Greeks colonized Southern Italy).
After dinner, there will be time to stroll around Sorrento and enjoy a musical presentation
of the history of the region in the historical Theatre Tasso.
Friday May 19th The "pathway of the gods" – a 3-hour medium difficulty hike on top of the cliffs
above the Amalfi coastline with some of the
ultimate views of the coast. For many this is THE highlight of the whole tour, although so
few tourists take the time to do it.
We’ll picnic at the end of the hike, in the tiny village of Nocelle and then take the local
micro-bus down to Positano and visit this
most elegant resort, before crossing directly to Capri for Shabbat. If there’s time we’ll visit
the summit of Anacapri before Shabbat;
candle-lighting is at 20.05, so NO PRESSURE!!
Those who for any reason do not hike can spend the morning in Sorrento, meet us for
lunch and join the visit to Positano and the crossing to Capri.
Shabbat May 20th - Capri
Coffee and cake – davening – full breakfast
Short walk in and around Capri
Mincha followed by Shabbat lunch – main meal of the day (seuda III
if you’re counting) Free time to relax in the lounge, by the pool or in your room.
A light supper will be served before Shabbat ends, 21.14
After Ma’ariv and Havdala - Saturday night Capri: music, coffee, limoncello
Sunday May 21st - off to Puglia
A ferry ride brings us from Capri to Naples where our bus awaits us for the cross-country
ride towards Puglia.
Our first stop is Trani - a
beautiful medieval port city. The synagogue was
returned to the Jews of the
region fairly recently after
being used as a church for half a millennium.
We’ll visit both the active synagogue and the small
local Jewish museum.
Hopefully there’ll be time for a coffee in the harbor before
we set off to our Hotel for a
Welcome Dinner in our
5*L Masseria Torremaizza
Monday May 22nd Lecce - known as the Florence of
Puglia, where a Jewish community
once held sway. Most famed for its unique style of architecture –
Baroque Rococo. A brand new
Jewish museum has recently opened in Lecce – and we’ll have
time to visit – or you can go
shopping!!!
After lunch we’ll proceed to Santa
Maria al Bagno for a moving visit
to the museum dedicated to all those holocaust survivors who
passed thru in the years 1943 –
1947 en route to Palestine.
Tuesday May 23rd
In the morning we’re going dolphin-watching - a fun cruise in
the bay of Otranto with lunch on
board.
On the way back, you have to see
Alberobello – home to hundreds of ancient trullo dwellings.
Their design origin is the subject
of much debate…
After lunch back in the hotel,
there’ll be
time to enjoy the hotel’s facilities, including its golf course and
beautiful pool, and we’ll visit
Ostuni later by night for a farewell drink!!
Wednesday May 24th After a leisurely breakfast (and a final swim??) we’ll transfer you to Brindisi airport (BDS)
for the 12.20 flight to Rome, from where you can fly onward to your destination. Perhaps
you’ll come to Israel for Shavuot. Dinner at the Goldbergs!!???
Kashrut and Shabbat Observance As always, we are delighted to offer the opportunity to enjoy this region to the
full while meticulously observing Kashrut and Shabbat. A mashgiach tmidi will
represent the Chief Rabbi of Venice, Rav Bahbout; we use regular approved milk and milk products, but chalav yisrael observers can be accommodated, if notified
