A quantum leap: Advancing developmental neuroscience of decision-making
This project merges quantum probability theory, recently found to better describe human
cognition, with behavioral choice tasks and functional magnetic resonance imaging
(fMRI) to gain a better understanding of youth decision-making processes, particularly
related to food choices. Total Direct Costs: $75,000
Frontiers Pilot & Collaborative Studies Program Bruce, AS (PI) 9/11-3/12
Food for Thought: Can Stomach Surgery Change the Brain?
This is first project to examine the effects of bariatric surgery on brain physiology in
comparison to a behavioral weight loss intervention. The findings from this research can
improve our understanding of successful long-term weight loss and open additional
avenues for new behavioral and pharmacological weight loss interventions.

Healthy Hawks Clinic at the University of Kansas Medical Center Dept of Pediatrics

Group leader for the Healthy Hawks childhood obesity clinic. Lead and co-lead parent
and child (ages 3-17) psychoeducational groups for a 12-week behavioral family obesity
treatment program. The Healthy Hawks Clinic involves a team including pediatricians,
psychologists, exercise physiologists, and dieticians to target the multi-factorial causes of
obesity.

Anxiety Report Scale (HARS) to prospective subjects for a cognitive-behavioral group
therapy for anxiety disorders. Conducted focus groups discussing subjects’ reactions and
