In June 1776, Betsy Ross was asked by George Washington and a Committee to sew the first “Star-

Spangled Banner” (flag).

The government did not tell exactly how the stars should be arranged and the size of the flag, so there

were several designs.

We also honor our country by saying the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
