There are 3 theories as to the origin of the name:

Thoothu (Dig) + Kudi (Drink) - As there were no rivers people had to dig borewell, to drink water

"Thoortha ( reclaimed) + Kudi“ (Settement) - Settlement built on land reclaimed from sea.

“Thoothuvan” ( Messenger) + “Kudi” (Camp) – In Ramayana, Hanuman camped here on his journey to Srilanka in search of Sitadevi.

The early name was “Thirumandhiranagar”

Location

It is one of the oldest seaports in the world and was the seaport of the Pandyan kingdom after Korkai (old pandya capital). 550BCE to 15th Century.

The place was famous for its pearl diving, fishing and ship building since old days.

Independence Movement in the early 20th century, with many leaders like VOC, Subramanya Bharathi etc .

Thoothukudi was established as a Municipality in 1866 with Roche Victoria as its first chairman. It attained the status of Corporation on August 5, 2008 after 142 years
