Objectives of this module:

To help teachers use the book effectively in the classroom;

To exploit the text in order to teach specific language contents such as sound system, grammar and vocabulary;

To instil the reading habit among pupils in a ‘fun’ environment; and

To help teachers assess pupils’ oral skill.

Objectives of Yr. 5 curriculum spec. in relation to the teaching of the story:

• Talk about likes and dislikes in relation to everyday matters and on solving matters in everyday life;

• Sing songs, recite simple poems and tell simple stories;

• Follow simple instructions and directions;

• Ask & answers simple questions;

• Read & understand simple text, simple stories & talk about the people and events in these stories;

• Write short paragraphs; and

• Show an awareness of moral values & love towards the nation.

Section 2 – Contents of the Book

The story is made up of two parts.

 The first part is about Turtle dropping in at Anansi’s house. Turtle wanted to have dinner at Anansi’s house. The second part is about Anansi going to Turtle’s house. Anansi was invited to dinner at Turtle’s house.

Synopsis

Anansi’s house was situated on a hill. The weather was very hot. Turtle reached Anansi’s house feeling hot, tired and hungry. At that time, Anansi was setting his dinner table. He had prepared a delicious yam dish. Anansi did not want to share it with anybody. He was not happy to see Turtle. Turtle knocked on Anansi’s door several times. Anansi did not want to invite Turtle into his house. Finally,Turtle said he had come for dinner. Anansi had to invite Turtle in. It was Anansi’s culture to do so. At the dinner table, Anansi found ways to stop Turtle from eating the yam. Many times, Anansi made Turtle wash his hands. Quickly, Anansi ate all the yam. Turtle did not eat the yam at all. He was dissappointed. He thanked Anansi before going home. Turtle was polite.

Three days later, Turtle invited Anansi to dinner. Anansi started his journey to Turtle’s house. It was early morning. Turtle’s house was by a river. Anansi arrived at Turtle’s house. He was hot, tired and hungry. At that time,Turtle was sunning himself on a rock. He greeted Anansi. Then, Turtle dived into the river. He wanted to prepare the dinner table. Meanwhile, Anansi sat under a shady palm leaf. On the dinner table were crayfish, clams, sardines,scallop, etc. Anansi dived into the river for dinner. Each time Anansi dived, he floated. Finally, Anansi put stones in the pockets of his jacket. This made him sink. Anansi sat on a chair for dinner. Turtle told Anansi about his culture. In Turtle’s culture, Anansi had to take off his jacket for dinner. Anansi then took off his jacket. He floated to the surface. Turtle ate the fabulous dinner alone.
