candle, the catapult, paved roads and the battery were just some

recognition of status was an essential part of Roman life.

citizen, matron, curule magistrate, emperor, general, workman, slave

Roman portraits

The Greeks idolized beauty, but the Romans were a little different.

Romans were more concerned with functional art and realistic representation.

Roman Mosaics

Used as a way to express their ideas and feelings

Mosaics were found on walls, furniture, sidewalks, and other surfaces

Conveyed stories about people, places, events, and animals

Mosaics were made up of glass tiles called “tesserae”

Tiles were filled with “grout” or plaster
