Term 1 Week 3
Mr Jordan Dennis joins our team from the
Wagga area, as one of our PE teachers.
Mrs Robyn Walsh joins us from the North Coast,
and is very much looking forward to teaching
Maths at HCS.
Mr Maurice O’Connor has joined our team
having previously been teaching down
Albury way. Mr O’Connor is our permanent
casual being employed under the Rural and
Remote program.
Mr Gregor Newton returns to teach English and
History, after 2 years filled with travelling
adventures.
Primary Classes: Due to increased student
numbers in Stage 2 & 3 we are opting to establish
a 6th primary class. This will enable us to
implement initiatives to target instruction in
Literacy & Numeracy and to further support all
students’ individual learning needs.
Class structure: K = Ms Maher/Ms Martin, Yr1 =
Ms Preston, Yr 2= Ms Scott, Yr 3 = Mrs Burgess, Yr
4/5 = Miss Trewartha & Yr 5/6 = Mr Tallon.
We hope to have the changes in place for the
start of next week but this will depend on when
we able to employ a primary teacher to replace
Miss Trewartha in her current role. A note will be
sent home to parents of students’ affected by this
positive change.
Sandy Ryan—Principal
A huge welcome back to all HCS students and a
very warm welcome to all our new families, for
what I can see is going to be a very rewarding
year of learning in 2020. We are delighted to
welcome our 2020 Kindergarten students to their
first year of “Big School”.
What a wonderful turnout at our annual whole
school swimming carnival. The weather was
perfect, the atmosphere electric and the
competition fierce. Quite a few records fell
across the board, which was great to see. A huge
thank you to Mrs Bartholomew and Mrs Burgess
for the organisation, special mention to Mrs Fitz
and Mrs Harding for the hours spent on the
paper work behind the scenes and to all our staff
who worked diligently all day to make this event
so successful. Thank you everyone.
Staffing: a very warm HCS welcome to our
returning and new staff members.
Mrs Anna Murphy continues as Head Teacher,
Teaching and Learning. Mrs Murphy is our
Learning Support Teacher.
Ms Germaine Schooling joins us from Sydney
as part of the Departments initiative “Rural
Teaching Experience Program”. Ms
Schooling will be teaching English.

ren is enrolled in the appropriate activities.
The major changes are:
Students will need to opt into a denomination

participating in the non-Scripture activities.
Non-Scripture students will be participating in
meaningful activities
Hillston Central School P&C
Have you thought about joining the HCS P&C?
The start of a new school year is a good time for us as
parents and carers to consider ways we can be more involved
in our child's schooling. It's a great thing to be able have an
input into your local school. It's also good to be able to
contribute financially through fundraising, so that school
facilities can be improved. And it's very beneficial to meet
regularly with the school principal and be informed about
achievements, changes and new developments as well being
able to give feedback. The P&C enables you to do all of this.
As well as that, our monthly meetings are a chance to catch
up with other parents/carers who are equally as interested in
the school as you are.
At a broader community level, the P&C is one of those local
associations that serve the community and help out with
catering for funerals and other occasions. This and other
groups are important in keeping the "fabric" of towns like
Hillston together.
Over the next several years, a number of current P&C
members will be moving on as their children finish their
schooling so there is a need now for some fresh faces. We
meet once a month on the second Tuesday of every month at
7 pm. I encourage you to come along to our first meeting on
the 11th February
Kent Burgess | HCS P&C Executive
Primary Slab
Just a reminder to parents, Primary School finishes at 2:50pm.

remain on Slab for playtime until the bus collects them at
3:25pm.
Students who do not travel by bus are required to leave school
grounds at 2:50pm.
If for any reason you require your child to stay behind
until 3:25pm, please contact the Front Office.

SCHOOL NEWS
ABSENCES & ATTENDANCE
In New South Wales, ‘compulsory school-age’ means that all
children from six years of age are legally required to be enrolled
at and attending school until they complete Year 10, and until
they turn 17 years of age.
Parents or carers are responsible for making sure that their
children comply with these legal requirements. Schools support
parents by monitoring student attendance and helping to
address attendance issues when they emerge.
Regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential. Should your child be absent from school, please ensure a note is sent with your child to their class teacher (Primary), Year Advisor (Secondary) or front office on return to school, giving reason for absence. Alternatively, you can call the front office at the school to explain the absence or submit a notification on the Skoolbag app. If your child is away for a few days you should try to bring a Doctor's Certificate. If your child is to be absent for 4 days or more please see the
office to obtain an “Application for Exemption” form prior to
your departure date. If the absence is for 3 weeks or more
parent/guardians must have an interview with the Principal.
Parents/Guardian must complete the appropriate forms from the
Department of Education and provide a letter explaining the
reason for absence.
Arriving Late or Leaving Early – If arriving late students must
present at the office for a late note to give to their teacher.
Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during
school hours without written permission or they are collected
from the front office by their parents/carer. On the rare
occasion that leaving early is necessary, a note signed by a
parent/carer indicating reason for early departure should be
handed in to the office by 9am.
Administration Office hours: 8.30am – 3.30pm Monday – Friday.
Hillston Central School Concert Band Program
The Hillston Central School hosts two concert bands a junior and a senior concert band. A Concert Band is a large group ensemble incorporating Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Instruments. Our band programs run on a Thursday afternoon during term time from 2.30pm-3.25pm for Junior band and Senior Band will run from 3.30-4.45pm. During rehearsal time students are taught the basics of how to play, maintain and care for the instrument that they choose to learn.
An introduction (come and try) session for students and parents that are interested in becoming involved in the band program will be held on Thursday the 20th February 2020 at 3.00pm in Room 17.
If you would like to be a part of the program and would like to see music become part of your child’s education and future please come along and see what it’s all about. If you are unable to attend and would like to be involved please contact Robin Bartholomew 69672999.
The Facts
Who will be involved: The program is on offer for any Hillston Central School Student from year 3 to Year 12 who is keen, interested and motivated to learn to play an instrument
What: Student tutorials with senior band members and community volunteers.
When: Thursday afternoons
Where: In the School Music Room
How: Instruments will be loaned out to students once they have paid a fully refundable deposit of $50 plus a $30 annual band fee. The deposit will be returned to students when Instruments are returned in the condition they are loaned out in. Mobile Phones and Digital Devices Procedure at HCS.
The new Student Use of Digital Devices and Online Services policy has been released for implementation in NSW public schools from the 27 January 2020. The policy is available at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library. The new policy includes the digital device restriction for primary
schools. Under the new policy, from the start of Term 1 2020:
primary schools will restrict the use of digital devices, including
mobile phones during school hours.
An updated version of HCS’s Digital Device Procedures, with the
inclusion of the Departments new requirements, will be
published in our newsletter in the next few weeks.
