ANIMAL ABUSE & NEGLECT By Julia Evans

TABLE OF CONTENTS Research Paper Physical Product What I’ve Learned Successes Challenges Mentor Reflections Conclusion

RESEARCH PAPER Topics: History, Different Types of animal Abuse, Organizations That Help Prevent Animal Abuse

Thesis: Animals and pets have made best friends and companions for years. Unfortunately they’ve been abused and neglected for just as long. Undeserving animals have fallen victim to neglect, abuse, and cruelty. Nonetheless, an animal’s quality of life is important, and there is no way to justify the cruel treatment many of them receive.

“More than 7 billion chickens are killed for their flesh each year in the United States, and 305 million hens are used for their eggs. Ninety-nine percent of these animals spend their entire lives in total confinement and there are no laws to protect them for the harsh practices.” (PETA – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)

PHYSICAL PRODUCT My 15 hours included: Volunteering at Brother Wolf (walking dogs, feeding them, cleaning their bedding)

Spending time with mentor (interviewing and learning what they do)

ABOUT BROTHER WOLF Brother Wolf is a no-kill shelter that offers services to our community including free spay & neuter assistance and a pet food pantry It is a clean, happy, and energetic environment, where animals receive mental stimulation and exercise through a variety of enrichment programs All the volunteers ensure that each pet receives lots of love and attention until finding their new home The adoption counselors work hard to find the right match between potential adopters and the animals

WHAT I’VE LEARNEDAnimals go through a lot from the abuse to the transition to foster homes and new families through Brother Wolf Animals (especially dogs) need compassion and companionship I’ve learned how to properly treat abused animals so as to not overwhelm them

SUCCESSESI’m glad I got to experience volunteering in a shelter, interacting with other volunteers/employees, and spending so much time with the animalsI’m happy I got to help

CHALLENGESHaving to clean all the animal’s bedding was a struggleHad trouble walking some of the dogs

MENTOR REFLECTIONMy mentor taught me a lot about how to care for the abused dogs She understood what it’s like and had experience because she owns shelter dogs herself

CONCLUSIONIn the future, I want to continue volunteering with Brother WolfI want to own my own shelter dogs Nothing I did not like about my experience
