ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF PEOPLE’S LIFE THROUGH THERAPY “ANIMALS”

FUNCTIONS

• Animal Angels Foundation works in the areas of

• developmental disorders,

• psychiatric disorders, • physical disabilities, • physical illnesses • behavioral/emotional

problems.

• They help children and adults learn new skills,

• speed up their recovery process

• cope with life's day-to-day challenges such as loss, stress, loneliness and illness, assisted by our therapy animals.

• They also have a team who make animal-assisted visits to places like orphanages, old age homes and hospitals.

OBJECTIVES

INSPIRATION

• Hi! I am a 2-year-old Golden Retriever who loves food and playing with my toys! I love making new friends especially when it involves lots of games and biscuits! I work with my co-therapists to help in putting a smile on people’s faces and helping them feel loved.

ANGEL AT WORK

• In 1955 Captain Leonard Cheshire set up Cheshire Home in Mumbai to serve physically disabled people. It has about 50 inmates.

• Angel, the therapy dog helps these men who are physically challenged. Having Angel visit them every weekend helps to alleviate their loneliness and depression

The Tree House Play Group and Nursery children love their four legged teacher Angel who teaches them how to be gentle and kind to animals.

For these tiny tots the best part is when they get to hug her and cuddle up close to her.

HELPING AT CHESHIRE HOME

WITH AN AMERICAN SCHOOL

ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY• AAT involves the use of

trained therapy animals to help the client deal with emotional, behavioral problems.

• Studies show that stroking an animal reduces blood pressure and heart rate.

• This makes people more relaxed and cooperative towards their therapy.

EXAMPLE OF AAT• In an AAT session to

improve the speech of a developmentally challenged child the therapist throws a ball at the dog Casper as a motivator. Since the child wants to play with Casper he is motivated to say the word “ball” every time he wants to play. The therapist then moves on to simple statements like “I want the ball”

SNEHA SADAN ORPHANAGE

• At Sneha Sadan orphanage, therapy dog Angel interacts with the children. Her playful presence is very effective with withdrawn or uncommunicative children.

• Angel helps open a channel of safe and easier communication between the child and the therapist. Through playing with her and also assisting in teaching her commands these children increase their self-esteem and confidence.
