Anointing of the Sick

• Is the sacrament of the Holy Church that is administered to the Catholics who because of sickness or old age are in danger of death, even if the danger is not proximate.

Meanings/Definitions

• Taking the word "sacrament" in its broadest sense, as the sign of something sacred and hidden

• The redemption of man was not accomplished in an invisible manner.

• The principal reason for a sacramental system is found in man.

• James 5:14-15 • 14 Is any among you sick? Let him

call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him.”

The priest comes to visit the sick person The church is concerned for the sick person

The family and friends of the sick person gather around and pray. The acknowledge their sins, ask God’s forgiveness, not

only for themselves but also for the one who is suffering

Relatives and representatives of the community express their concern for the total welfare of the sick person.

The priest place his hands on the head of the sick person This symbolizes the healing touch of Jesus and the sharing of his healing Spirit. It also symbolizes the care of God and the

Church for whoever is sick. The priest ask for divine assistance over the sick person.

The priest anoints with blessed oil the sick person’s forehead and hands and says:”Through this holy anointing, may the Lord, In His love and mercy, help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit, may the Lord, who frees you from sin, save you

and raise you up. Amen”

The special grace of the sacrament is communicated to the patient. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, of strength, and of health. The anointing of oil and the accompanying the words

of the priest become sources of encouragement for the sick. It strengthens them against the temptations of the devil and

frees them from anxiety.

Summary

– the sacrament of the anointing of the sick is a manifestation of Christ’s genuine concern for the preservation of life

– we are all called to help in the alleviation of the suffering of our fellowmen. This way we continue Jesus’ work of healing

o we can help those who are sick by:

• enlightening then and helping them face their situation realistically

• do acts thoughtfulness and kindness like visiting them and sending them cards, flowers or books

• pray for them

• helping them discern God’s will for them• leading them back to God• making them realize that after an

illness, there is growth

Summary

–we must do what we can to let them know we care for them. Our concern, care, help, and nearness can lessen the suffering and pain of illness.
