ANTI-BACTERIAL POWER OF BLUE AND

GREEN CLAYSBY – GAURAV YADAVBSc MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY3rd YEAR

A. What is clay?

Clay is a fine-grained natural rock or soil material that combines one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matters. examples: Kaolin clay Fuller's clay( multani mitti ) Bentonite clay

Introduction

Since prehistoric times, humans have used clays for medicinal purposes.

Whether through ingestion, mud baths, or as a way to stop bleeding from wounds, clay has long helped keep humans healthy.

A new discovery by Arizona state university(ASU) scientists (Lynda Williams, Rajeev Mishra, Morrison ) shows that two specific metallic elements in the right kinds of clay can kill disease causing bacteria that infect humans and animals.

Introduction It contains one metallic elements chemically reduced

iron(Fe2+) and second one is aluminum(Al3+). The green clay found in France and blue clays found in

Oregon. It formed in volcanic ash layers as rocks become

altered by water that is oxygen deprived and hydrogen rich.

It was first used to treat the Buruli ulcer, a flesh eating skin disease, in patients of Africa.

These blue and green clays works against a broad spectrum of human pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) and E.coli.

Mechanism of action

• Two elements in the clay work in tandem to kill bacteria.• One metallic element is chemically reduced iron, which in

small amounts is required by bacterial cell for nutrition--- tricks the cell into opening its wall.

• Then another element—aluminum—props the cell wall open, allowing a flood of iron into the cell.

• This overabundance of iron then poisons the cell, killing it as the reduced iron becomes oxidized.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE BLUE AND GREEN CLAYS

MUD BATHS A mud bath is a bath of mud, commonly

from areas where hot spring water can combine with volcanic ash.

Mud bath have existed for thousands of years, and can be found now in high – end spas in many countries of world.

FACE PACKSIn this clays is applied evenly all over the face.

To heal wounds & stop bleeding

Apply a gauze of clay to cease bleeding and infections.

It cures the skin disease

In Africa a patient was suffering from a Buruli ulcer ( flesh eating skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans) is cured by green clay.

Future prospective

In future these clays may can be used as soap to treat various skin diseases.

It may be used to treat fungal infections by Candida albicans.

It may be used to treat diarrhoea and irritable bowel syndrome.

It may be used to treat the Aflatoxicosis.
