ESRI Information• ESRI - Environmental Systems Research Institute.

• Founded in 1969. Headquarters in California.

• In 1980’s began to develop GIS tools. Released first commercial software in 1982, ARC/INFO. In 1986 a PC version was introduced.

• In 1990’s ArcView was released. Began expanding in 1995.

• Today has 2,700 employees. Privately owned. Users in 150 countries.

• ESRI is one of the largest geospatial data providers in the world.

History of ArcGIS• ArcView 1.0 – Released in early 1990’s

UNIX based with command line interface.

• ArcView 2.X – Increased functionality. Supported Win95, Win2000, UNIX and Mac OS9.

• ArcView GIS 3.X – Released in 1997 and final stable in 2002. Full of new features including 3D Processing. Still used today.

History of ArcGIS• ArcGIS 8.X – Released in 1999. Windows Based.

Combined ArcView’s interface and Arc/INFO’s power. Introduced ArcMap and ArcCatalog. Major changes.

• ArcGIS 9.X – Released in 2004. Included ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Engine. More functionality, more processing tools, improved performance.

• ArcGIS 10 – Will be faster, more responsive, easier, more efficient, more functional and improved in other miscellaneous aspects.
