Functions of VR:

1) Gaming/Entertainment

Lec5

What makes gaming in VR different?

Next slide, we have video game recommendations from the instructors!

● Immersion● 3D Sound● Room-Scale● Interactive (like the Wii but

better)

Arguably the biggest driver in the VR industry currently

Dead and Buried

Robo Recall

VR Rollercoasters

Medical

Industrial

Aerospace

Others

Medical: Surgical Training

Companies in the space:

● Osso VR● Mentice

Medical:

Exposure TherapyConquering Fears:

- Arachnophobia- Acrophobia

Treating PTSD

- Learning how to handle “triggers” in a safe and controlled environment

Medical:

Phantom Limb Pain

Phantom Limb Pain - Sensations that an individual experiences relating to a limb or an organ that is not physically part of the body.

In VR, patients play games using a virtual limb, which helps them gain some control and learn, for example, how to relax that painfully clenched fist.

Industrial:

Driving Simulator

By incorporating VR into motion/driving simulators, users will no longer be limited to the view in front of them (front screens). Rather, VR will enable users to see all of the virtual environment.

Industrial:

Virtual CAD

Uses:

● Visualizing/prototyping models before fabrication.

● Collaboration

Aerospace:

NASA

NASA has been using VR at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to train astronauts for spacewalks since 1992.

3). 360 Content

360 Photos

360 Cameras

Quite a few 360 cameras in the market.

- Ricoh Theta (~$330)- Samsung Gear 360 (~$180)

360 Film

- Video that captures your entire surrounding. Similar to 360 photos, except it’s a video.

360 Video- Henry was created probably using something similar to Maya. - However, some 360 cameras also support capturing 360 video.

Nokia OZOPrice: Too much ($45K-60K)

4). Telepresence

Business

Medical

Social

Business:

Virtual Meetings

- Greater potential for collaboration.

- Saves money in transportation from a company perspective.

Medical

- Telepresence and collaboration with doctors.- Berkeley professor, Ruzena Bajcsy, was working

on something similar.- VR@Berkeley also had a team researching this.

Social:

Mission ISS

Simulator to see what it’s like to be inside the International Space Station

(Emmy-nominated)

Computer Science:

Neural Net Visualization

Another project from VR@Berkeley, led by Yulin.

Fashion:

Virtual Dressing RoomAvametric has received $10.5 million to try to build its virtual dressing room.

Berkeley Professor James O’Brien is on the team.

Real Estate:

Virtual Housing ToursBerkeley professor Avideh Zakhor has a start-up called “Indoor Reality”.

It has created sensors the size of backpacks to map and model the indoor.
