ART & DESIGN - Y8 – BUILDINGS COLLAGE
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – BUILDINGS COLLAGE
This week we are going to take inspiration
from Scottish Artist Lucy Jones. She
produces architectural artwork (based on
buildings) which are made from lots of
found pieces of paper which are
COLLAGED (stuck to a surface) and then
she adds LINEAR (line) work over the top
of her collage. Her work is quite MESSY
and EXPRESSIVE – so that is what we are
aiming for today!

ART & DESIGN - Y8 – BUILDINGS COLLAGE
Task 1 (30mins) – choose
ONE of the 3 building
images on the following
pages to work with today.
Then sketch out the main,
large parts/shapes of the
image on your A4 paper
(any paper will do for this)
It doesn’t have to be
perfect – just use the
image as inspiration for
the shapes!
Sketch a Building…
Roughly sketch out the
main shapes onto your
paper first in pencil

Task 2 (20mins) – Now to have
a bit of a hunt around – what
papers can you use in your
collage? Have a look to see if
you can find at least 3 or 4
different papers to use today
My suggestions include:
Newspaper
Paper bag
Wrapping paper
Graph paper
Packaging / receipts
Tissue paper
Old maps
Doily
Music paper
Find Papers to collage with…
I’ve found quite a few
different papers and bits
that I can use for my
collage – although I may
not use them all!
ART & DESIGN - Y8 – BUILDINGS COLLAGE
Task 3 (40mins) – Using your
different found paper, start to
collage them onto your paper
now – cut up pieces that are
roughly similar shapes to those
that you drew and then start
sticking them onto your drawn
out building
The shapes don’t need to be that
accurate – just focus on the main
shapes and angles
You can overlap them
Try to stick them down as well as
you can
Cutting and
sticking …
This is how I’ve used my
different papers to create
the collaged shapes

Task 4 (40mins) – Next you will
need to get your chosen image
back up on screen to look at;
start working back into your
collage with pen line work to
show more details in the
building Use a biro/fineliner or sharpie to do
this – or all 3 to get different
thicknesses of lines
You could use a ruler for some of it
if you like
Us different marks to work into the
building (scribble, hatching etc)
Working back into the
collage with pen…
My Collage piece fully
worked into with biro and
sharpie pens

Task 5 (20mins)
OPTIONAL
If you have time then consider
working into the sky/background
of the piece too. You could use
the following to do this:
Coffee wash – crush up a few
grains and mix with a couple of
drops of water
Paint – any that you have
Pencil smudge – scribble your
pencil on a scrap piece of paper
then rub your thumb into it then
smear it into the sky
Collage – use another colour to
add clouds/sky
Extension Task ……
My finished piece with
background – I used some blue
household (emulsion) paint and
a bit of extra biro scribble

We hope you enjoyed the tasks for today!
Make sure you keep your work safe and
together as we would very much like to see
it all when we get back
We will be doing lots more drawing tasks in
the next few weeks – so keep all of your
drawings together and later this term we will
be showing you how ideas for making them
into a sketchbook
