An d it seems indeed that the men to whom we are indeb ted for the in sti tut ion of
init iati ons were quite com peten t men. I n fact they have long ago expressed tr uth in the
disguise of a riddle in that they said that he who arrives in Hades uninitiated and un-
admitted to the mysteries shall lie in mud, while he that comes there purified andinitiated shall dwell with the gods. For truly as their masters of in i t ia t ion ceremonies
tell us, man y carry the wand bu t few are the Bacchants. An d by Bacchants I take them
to mean nobody else but those who have properly pursued philosophy.
W e a r e so f a m i l i a r w i t h t h is p a ss ag e t h a t w e a r e i n d a n g e r o f o v e r l o o k i n g
w h a t e x t r a o r d i n a r y c l a i m i t i m p l i e s. M y s t e r y r e l i g io n a ss er ts t h a t i t c a n
a s su r e o n e o f a b e t t e r l o t i n a f t e r l i fe . B u t i t t u r n s o u t t h a t p h i l o s o p h y is t r u e
m y s t e r y r e l ig i o n . I f t h e r e i s i m m o r t a l i t y , i f t h e r e is s o m e t h i n g l ik e h e a v e n
a n d h e l l, s a lv a t io n a n d d a m n a t i o n , o r w h a t e v e r t e r m s w e p r e f e r t o u s e , i t
i s t h e p h i l o s o p h e r w h o i s a s s u r e d o f s a l v a t i o n a n d h e a v e n .N o t t h a t P l a t o h a s e v e r b e e n m o d e s t in h i s c l ai m s m a d e i n t h e n a m e o f
p h i l o s o p h y . A f t e r a ll , h is c la i m t h a t o n l y a p h i l o s o p h e r c a n b e a k i n g is n o t
so m o d e s t e it h e r ; b u t a c t u a l ly t h e c l a i m m a d e b y h i m i n t h e Phaedo i s e v e n

N o w , w h a t b e c a m e o f P la t o s c l a i m t o k i n g s h ip ? I t is q u i t e o b v i o u s t h a t
i n s p e a k i n g o f k i n g s P l a t o w a s t h i n k i n g i n t e r m s o f t h e G r e e k c i t y -s ta t e o r
a l e a g u e o f c i t y s ta te s . B u t s i n c e t h e t i m e o f A l e x a n d e r t h e G r e a t , t h e c i t y-

state disappeared. To think of the successors of Alexander and later of the
Rom an r epublic or the Roma n empir e in terms of the Greek city-state quiteobviously no longer made sense. On the whole, we could say the idea of the
philosopher king gave way to another--the philosopher as educator of the
crown prince or as the director of conscience of the prince. Th e idea of the
philosopher-king survived in an extenuated form. 8
But how about the other claim--the claim that philosophy is true religion?
Did it survive in either its original form or in some extenuated way?
Perhaps we could expect a representative of religion, particu larly of some
mystery religion, to have objected to Plato s claim. Whatever the reason,
nothing of this kind happened. The representatives of Greek religion seem
to have remained silent?
By this I don t mean to say that Plato s claim was generally and explicitly
acknowledged. Obviously it was not by those whose intellectual horizon did
not even include philosophy. And there must have been quite a number of
them. In fact, as the newly discovered tablet was found in Pharsalus, while
the older ones were found on Crete and in Italy and as this newly found
tablet belongs to the fourth c entury B.c., while among the ones previously
discovered we find one belonging to the end of the second century A.D., it
turns ou t that the mystery religion which produced the tablets had a con-
siderable geographic range and continued in existence for many centuries
after Plato had pu t forward philosophy s claim to replace it. This could
surely be expected.
But it is worthwhile to reflect for a moment on the possible effects of this
claim on those able and willing to listen to Plato s claim. No doubt --some
might have accepted it wholeheartedly. If there is a difference between the
lot of some and that of some others--they, the philosophers, were assured of
the better lot. On hearing Sophocles

they might have thought that it was they who have seen the T~I guarantee-
ing true life in the beyond.
But one wonders--how did they face the problem of those whom nature
itself prevented from becoming initia ted into the mysteries of philosophy--
and that means, how about those who died as children?

tion or immortality or simply a better lot in the beyond for those who,recognize the importance of any of these. Is salvation to be achieved only
e x o p e r e o p e r a n t i s or is its effect secured e x o p e r e o p e r a t o ? Whether they
knew it or not, the ones who had the ir children initiat ed into mystery re-
ligions defended the latter attitude. Those who sided with Plato implicitly
defended the former. And to the extent that the concept of salvation is still
a live concept, I don't think that the issue characterized by the two formulas
e x o p e r e o p e r a t o and e x o p e r e o p e r a n t i s ) has been settled. Whoever asserts
that salvation depends on the former will have to defend himself from the
objec tion that he comes dange rousl y close to believing in magical effectsYWhoever asserts the other idea will have to defend himself from the objec-
tion that he makes salvation impossible for anybody not mature enough to
perform the necessary o p u s and not only has to rely on something as vague
as the concept of years of discretion or a similar concept--but to leave it
undecided what happens to those who died before they reached the age of
discretion.
However, no matter what the reaction to Plato's claim in antiquity, one
thing seems to be sure, I repeat: no explicit objection to it came from quar-
ters which we would probably be inclined to consider duty bound to do so,
viz. from representatives of any of the Greek religions.
But the situation changed entirely in the Hellenistic world--i.e., in the
world in which there was no other philosophy but Greek philosophy--but
in which there were religions other than Greek religions. How did those
among the adherents to these non-Greek religions feel when they were con-
fronted with the claim of Plato? As a rule, they were educated in Greek
spirit--were they ready to become hellenized to such an extent as to give
Greek philosophy priority over their own religion?
Undoubtedly many did. But not all. I am going to cite two instances
representing two non-Greek religions. First, we have the Egyptian religion.
In the first cen tur y A.D. we meet a n E gypti an high priest C haer emon , wh o
for a while was Nero's educator. He most certainly was thoroughly hellen-
ized and, as far as we can see, professed the Stoic philosophy. But in some
