Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T-pain, for the main reason that it gives an interesting twist

to their one-tone vocals in their music

The Basic idea of audio compression is to lower the louder parts of the

song to decrees the dynamics, this then makes to parts of the song that are too harsh sound softer, and the parts that were too low

more audible.

Compression is used in the following example.

The delay sound effect records an input signal to an audio storage medium, then it plays it back after a period of time. It

can create the sound of a repeating echo, by either playing your recorded sound back multiple times, or played

back into the recording again.

Delay is used in the song by U2, you can here it in the guitar. Its

properly most famous in this song.

D I S T O R T I O N

In order to create a dirty, fussy, hard pounding sound to your audio, you would properly use distortion. The distortion sound effect does this

compressing the peaks of a musical instrument's sound wave

and adding overtones.

Though The Beatles did not invent distortion, they did bring it to the

masses in their song ‘Revolution’ taken from the album White Album. This effect is most commonly used in the genres of Pop, Rock and Metal. But it is also used in some hip-hop songs as recognised in

rapper ‘Drakes’ song ‘Karaoke’

an extreme form of expansion noise gating is. Signals below a certain point

are either heavily weakened or eliminated completely. This leaves only

higher level signals and removes background noise when the signal is not

present.

Phil Collins is a good example of noise gating in his hit single ‘In The

Air Tonight’, the noise gating in this song is best heard on in the

drums.

E Q U A L I Z A T I O N

When your boosting or reducing the levels of various frequencies in a signal you are using the sound

effect of Equalization. For Example, equalization can mean turning the bass/treble controls up or down.

An Equalizer is used in the following examples.

C H O R U S

The chorus effect is designed to make a signal sound like it was produced by

multiple similar sources. For example, if you add the chorus effect to a solo

singer's voice, the results sounds like a chorus.

Chorus is one of the most common effects and is used in mostly all genres, it is most evident in the following examples.

P H A S E R Phasing is a

sweeping/whooshing effect often used in music. The

effect is created by mixing the original signal with

another version of itself which has been phase-shifted.

This results in various out-of-phase interactions over time which gives the sweeping effect used in this example of ‘Voices’ by Disturbed

but only in the intro.

A talk box is an effects unit that allows a musician to modify the

sound of a musical instrument. The musician controls the modification by lip syncing, or by changing the
