1. Convict Crimes

*( Convict means ‘der Gefangene’ )

*There were a lot criminals or convicts in England during 18th and 19th centuries. British Government decided to send those criminals to Australian colonies. The reason for this was that British government wanted to separate them from the society.

*There were Catholics, politicians, women, political reformers among the convicts.

*Most of the convicts were sent to Western Australia in 1868.

1.2. Convict Crimes

*The 70% of the convicts were English and Welsh, 24% of them were Irish and 5% were Scottish.

*There were also Maoris from New Zealand, Chinese from Hong Kong and slaves from the Caribbean.

*Most of the convicts were thieves who had been convicted in the great cities of England.

1.3.Convict Crimes

*Transportation was an important part of the English and Irish systems of punishment.

*It was a way to deal with increased poverty and overpopulation, too.

*Most of the convicts were working men and women with a range of skills.

2.Bushrangers

*The word "bushranger" was first used in Australia in 1805.

* It described three men who had stopped a cart near Sydney.

*Then, the word was used for criminals who attacked people on the roads or in the bush (the Australian countryside away from towns).

*The first bushrangers were escaped convicts.

* One of the last bushrangers was Ned Kelly who was captured in 1880.

2.1.Bushrangers

*Bushrangers often stole expensive things from banks or coaches.

*There were more than 2000 bushrangers during Australia's past.

*Most were simply criminals and thieves.

*A few bushrangers became famous and were seen as heroes.

* They are part of a long history that has men such as Robin Hood and Dick Turpin in England, or Jesse James and Billy the Kid in the US.

3.Riots in Australia

*Riot means ‘der Aufstand’ and disturbance means der Aufruhr.

*This is a list of civil disturbances in Western Australia.

*Some of the disturbances in this list were ‘race riots, prison riots, and religious conflicts’ - often Protestant versus Catholic groups.

3.1. Riots in Australia

*The earliest civil disturbances were actions by the local population against European settlers.

*In the convict era, there were collective actions by convicts.

*There were problems or conflicts about the Goldfields in the 1890s and 1900s as a result there were demonstrations and protests by workers.

Thank you for listening.
