Shalom, Rav
Dear all,
About 15 years ago, Ron and I sold our former home and prepared to move into our current one. But there was a three month gap, as the new home needed extensive remodeling. My sister, Rachel, opened her home and heart and invited us to stay with her.
Moving. Sigh....
We made piles. What do we store? What do we donate to others? What do we throw away? What do we bring for the transition, treasures we can't live without?
I think of this every year as we enter the Holy Day season. This is our time to take inventory. What will we pack in our spiritual luggage to take with us into the New Year? What baggage do we really need to get rid of? What emotions do we need to process with others? And what treasures are closest to our hearts that we want to keep them with us at all times?
What we learned when we were moving is that the most meaningful treasure (not counting the DSL computer connection) was each other. Rachel, Jake (Rachel's dog), Ron, and I grew closer as a family.
And for the Holy Days, as we take inventory, we realize that all the stuff we have becomes meaning-less - and the connections with those we love become central. As we enter the year 5777 seek out those connections, build upon them, nurture them, and grow.
Ron joins me in wishing you and all you love a Shana Tova, a year of goodness and peace.
Rabbi Zach Shapiro
Our Light Shines Brighter. Together.
In this season of refl ection and renewal, we remember the meaningful moments and diffi cult times of the past and look forward to the bright potential of the future. Our future at Temple Akiba will be even brighter this year. I am so excited to announce that we will have a Cantorial Intern
join our staff this year!
I fi rst began my work here at Temple Akiba as a Cantorial Intern 10 years ago. The lessons and mentorship that I received in my time as an intern were invaluable to the development of my skills as a Cantor. I was so fortunate that this internship developed into the full-time position which I now hold.
Our intern will be Orly Campbell, a wonderful young woman studying at the Academy for Jewish Religion, CA, my alma matter. She is in her fourth year of Cantorial school and is a mom of two young children.
I am thrilled to off er her the same opportunities and mentorship that I received. Her responsibilities will include teaching the 7th grade Religious School class, tutoring Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, Adult Education, leading services and shadowing life-cycle events.
I am looking forward to this incredible opportunity that will help provide a wealth of knowledge and experience in the development of Orly's career as a Cantor and clergyperson. In addition, our Synagogue will greatly benefi t from her beautiful voice, engaging knowledge and warm spirit.
May this new year be one of new beginnings, meaningful moments, health and happiness for all!
Shana Tovah,
Cantor Lonee Frailich

President’s Message ECC & Religious SchoolDear Families,
Welcome to the new school year. This year the buzz word in Jewish education is engagement. What can we do to engage our students in Jewish learning and a life of Judaism to follow? More importantly, how can we engage with you as parents and your family as a whole to actively participate in Jewish life? What new relationships can we build this year with one another and with Judaism as we explore what it means to lead a Jewish life?
We will focus our learning on what we can do as students, members of this community, and citizens of the world to be caring people and to promote acts of loving kindness. Through these areas of study we hope to create new beginnings for your children and your families at home. We hope to lay the ground work for continued exploration of how your family can be involved in more acts of gimulut chasidim at home and beyond.
This year, we continue this theme by welcoming many new staff members. Please join me in welcoming all of our new teachers and staff . I am excited and pleased to add these amazing new teachers to our schools. I would also like to add a warm welcome to all of our new students and families this year. Whether it is your fi rst time at Temple Akiba, or just your fi rst time at school, welcome to the community. We are glad you are here and we look forward to getting to know you this year.
As we prepare for the High Holidays we are focusing on forgiveness with our students. Judaism teaches us to:
● Acknowledge when we do something wrong
● Feel regret for those actions or words
● Express our regret
● Promise not to do the same thing again
We often ask our children to forgive others: their siblings for hitting them or taking their toys, their classmates for pushing them, their friends for not treating them nicely. At times, we even ask them to forgive adults for breaking a promise or not following through with something.
Children don’t always understand exactly what it means when we ask them to forgive someone who says they are “sorry.” Sometimes they think it means accepting or tolerating something wrong that someone did. They may also be worried about what happens if those actions are repeated. When someone apologizes to your child and asks for forgiveness, you may want to teach him/her to say, “I don’t like what you did and I hope you won’t do it again. Because you said you were sorry, I forgive you.” It is important for people to learn to forgive, not only out of compassion for others but also for their own emotional well-being. Let your child know that forgiving others is something that can make them feel good under the right circumstances. Holding onto anger and resentment can cause people to feel anxious and apprehensive. Practicing forgiveness early in life helps children become compassionate, more comfortable, and ultimately successful in their relationships with others.
Shana Tova!
Wishing you and your families a Happy New Year,
Randee Bishoff , Director of Education
ECC & Religious SchoolD F ili
Summer is over and the children are back to school and Religious school starts soon. Our Akiba Camps were very successful and everyone had fun. Thank you to all of the Temple Akiba staff that made this possible.
High Holy Days are just around the corner beginning with Erev Rosh Hashanah service on October 2, 2016. The family service will begin at 5:30 p.m. so that young children can attend. The regular service will begin at the 7:30 p.m. Temple Akiba High Holy Days services are held at Veterans Memorial Auditorium (south-west corner of Overland and Culver). I hope to see you there and that you will participate in our many programs throughout the year. I would like to wish everyone a L’Shana Tova, a very Happy New Year! May this year, 5777, be fi lled with health, happiness, and many simchas.
The Temple Akiba Open House for prospective new members is scheduled for Friday, September 9, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Please invite your non-affi liated friends and neighbors so we can show off what Temple Akiba has to off er!
Please return (if you have not yet done so) your completed membership forms. We have upgraded our computer systems to the 21st century and need to validate and correct our data.
The Akiba Board and Staff are working hard to plant the seeds so that our future generations can benefi t from the strong community we are creating now. To ensure the strength of our congregations’ future, we must both support the current needs of programs and facilities, as well as fund for the future growth. We’ve been fortunate that so many have donated for the future of our facility through our Campaign of Light fundraising eff orts. We ask that while you continue to support the campaign you also help “tend to our existing garden” as we plant the seeds for the future. Temple Akiba needs your help to stay strong now as well as in the future.

AKIBA SPOTLIGHT onAKIBA SPOTLIGHT on
Some people help others some of the me, and then there are people who just seem to be helping all of the me. Ray Mar n is one of those people.
Ray has been married to Sunny for 24 years. They met when they were both working at Santa Monica College. Ray s ll works there, although Sunny has moved on to work at LA Unifi ed School District. Some mes we like to call them our Ray of Sunshine! They have a wonderful son, Ma hew, who has been a part of Temple Akiba Religious School since they became members of our congrega on 10 years ago.
When Ray is not working at SMC, or helping out with the audio, visual and House & Grounds Trustee du es at Temple Akiba, he can be found volunteering at Kayaks 4 Kidz, the Westchester Li le League or the Southern California Live Steamers (mini trains).
Why does he do it? Because he loves seeing the response from people. Seeing the kid's faces as they realize they can do something they never dreamed they could do inspires him. Knowing that through his eff orts, congregant members who are bedridden at home can see our Kabbalat and High Holy Day services and feel included in our community. He is also proud of the fact that his son Ma hew has taken a er him, and volunteers right alongside of him, helping teach kids and working the sound board at our High Holy Day services.
The next me you see Ray, just say, “Thanks, Ray, for making a diff erence!”by Carol Diamond
