Club FrameworkA Framework to Support Basketball Clubs in Scotland
The basketballscotland Club FrameworkThe basketballscotland Club Framework has been developed to support the growth of basketball clubs
in Scotland.
The framework has been created to provide a reference point to improve your club setting and help
establish priorities for improvement. It has also been designed to support the design of a club
development plan.
The framework is designed to be flexible and easy to understand. basketballscotland understand that
each club is different, and what may work in one club may not work in another. The framework is not a
stringent method to running an effective basketball club in Scotland.
How to use the Framework
There are 7 club framework principles. The principles could be used as the pillars for
a development plan. For each principle, we offer a number of action statements. The
statements are designed to be expansive, so clubs of different sizes can utilise them
based on their own needs.
For each of the action statements, the club’s leadership should ask themselves if the
club already do this. If the statement does not currently relate to the club, the
leadership should consider if the statement could be actioned into the club setting
moving forward.
The club’s leaders reflecting on these statements will help the club identify actions
the club need to put in place in the development plan to progress. These actions will
be appropriate to the scale and size of the club.
As the club review the action statements, consider what the club are striving to
achieve, the club’s vision and mission.
PEOPLEPeople are the heart of the club and central to all that they do. Through support and
recognition a club can ensure they have capacity and skills to deliver experiences
which engage, inspire and motivate. Understanding their people and community will
help clubs develop their workforce, offer appropriate opportunities, address
inequalities and address social inclusion.
Our Clubs:
understand the importance of and shape a positive culture for their people
have volunteers with the right skills to fulfil their role and provide appropriate
training opportunities where required
programmes are inclusive and open to everyone in their community
empower and support young people as leaders which encourages succession
planning
value and celebrate the contribution of all club members
employ people to help achieve their aspirations
GOVERNANCE
The club's leadership takes a lead in adopting appropriate policies, procedures and
practices. As part of the club's vision, the leadership creates a safe environment for
the club's people whilst ensuring a robust plan is in place for the future.
Our Clubs:
have relevant policies and procedures which are reviewed annually
meet basketballscotland's standards for child wellbeing and protection in sport
have leadership positions with clear guidelines and roles with suitable succession
planning
have a clear and transparent leadership structure
understand the organisational risks and develop a plan to manage these
adopt the appropriate organisational legal entity
PLACES
Basketball facilities which provide a positive environment, are in appropriate
locations and welcome all will help attract new and retain current members. Working
proactively with local partners to provide the best possible facility access will improve
and maintain the basketball environment.
Our Clubs:
where appropriate, have facility development plans to meet club aspirations
facilities meet competition requirements
provide a warm and welcoming environment for the community at their facilities
facilities meet the needs of the club and provide opportunity for growth
facilities cater for everyone as they are accessible and inclusive
engage with their members and the local community to understand their facility
needs
ORGANISED
Being well organised will help the club achieve their ambitions. One way to achieve
this is through applying suitable processes and efficient club administration. This
allows the club to effectively focus attention on growing the club in the form of
membership and revenue streams.
Our Clubs:
have a clear vision of who they are and what they aim to achieve
plan accordingly with basketball games and events in Scotland
use effective systems to manage member payments, registrations,
communications and queries
have the right people doing jobs through the club pathway
regularly assess the quality of what they offer their members
PATHWAY
A consistent approach to player development across the club pathway will contribute
to players reaching their full potential. The club's people should be connected and
working together to achieve common goals regarding skills and behaviours.
Implementing this approach will take time and perseverance is essential to make this
happen.
Our Clubs:
recognise that players develop at different rates and offer them a wide range of
opportunities to develop
commit to help all players develop a clear understanding of the development
process and how they can improve
provide additional support to players committed to maximising their potential
access the right competitive outlet, providing the opportunity for their players to
improve
commit to working together and reviewing progress against world class standards
ensure their players drive their own development
SUSTAINABLE
Securing the club's long term future can be aided through planning. A robust
development plan which supports the club's vision will increase the likelihood of this
vision being achieved. Effective planning should be in place to deliver the club's key
projects. To assist planning and day to day operations, accurate financial systems
are important.
Our Clubs:
have financial management systems and processes which are fit for purpose
develop at a rate which allows them to maintain high standards
have suitable methods for monitoring club's key projects
promote retention and proactively seek ways to increase membership
seek additional revenue through non-membership income (i.e. fundraising &
sponsorship)
reflect on their work and aspire to continuously improve
PROFILE
A wide range of methods are now availble to increase the club's profile and to make
your community aware of what the club offers. Increasing the exposure of the club
and demonstrating the power of physical activity has the potential to inspire new
people to become involved in basketball, growing participation.
Our Clubs:
communicate information about opportunities they offer players, coaches,
officials, and administrators
communicate their success stories and the impact they have on their community
have an in depth knowledge of their community and they understand the impact of
their activities
have values which are communicated to the community that underpin the culture
of the club and the behavior of it's people
are aware of other organisations who could be engaged as potential partners to
achieve common goals
What We Should Do Next
Commit to Improve
The club’s leadership should be committed to working together to drive growth
throughout the club. There are expertise and resources that can help progress
growth. Growth doesn’t need to cost a lot, neither does it have to take a lot of time.
The club will only grow successfully if every leader has the same desire to grow and
is committed to the same vision. This framework can be used to shape your clubs
development plan.
Work with Partners
Seek what support is available from basketballscotland, local and national partners
to identify the support that can help the club improve. The club can connect and
collaborate with other local clubs, schools and other organisations. The club should
actively look for new organisations to share resources and expertise with as the club
grows.
