Book Cover Typography Discuss decisions made…

Alan Fletcher's The Art of Looking Sideways is an absolutely extraordinary and inexhaustible "guide to visual awareness", a virtually indescribable concoction of anecdotes, quotes, images and bizarre facts that offers a wonderfully twisted vision of the chaos of modern life.

Who would have thought a book about punctuation could cause such a sensation? Certainly not its modest if indignant author, who began her surprise hit motivated by "horror" and "despair" at the current state of British usage: ungrammatical signs ("BOB,S PETS"), headlines ("DEAD SONS PHOTOS MAY BE RELEASED") and band names ("Hear'Say") drove journalist and novelist Truss absolutely batty. But this spirited and wittily instructional little volume, which was a U.K. #1 bestseller, is not a grammar book, Truss insists; like a self-help volume, it "gives you permission to love punctuation."

Follows the trials and tribulations of a boy with a voracious appetite for books. Henry discovers his unusual taste by mistake one day, and is soon swept up in his new-found passion. And better still, he realises that the more books he eats, the smarter he gets. But a book-eating diet isn't the healthiest of habits, as Henry soon finds out.

Edible Typography Discuss decisions made…

It is important to analyse shape and form of characters as well as the typeface and methods used to create logo types.

Conclusions…

• Typefaces can be informative, emotive, persuasive, encouraging, sympathetic, outrageous, scary, shy, feminine, masculine - in short, they build character.
