Miss O’Leary’s Fifth Grade ClassWelcome Students!

Welcome to 5th Grade! This is an important

year for you! I will give you an

introduction to 5th grade and to our classroom.

If you have any questions during my presentation, please raise your hand and wait to be called on.

All About Me My Background

I live in Noble. I attended West Richland

Elementary and High School, and Eastern Illinois University.

My Experience I’ve been teaching for 6

years. I have taught 5th and 1st

grades, but 5th is my favorite.

Interests I like to play pool,

volleyball, and cornhole.

I teach Sunday School and Children’s Church at my church.

What subjects will we be learning

about this year?

Reading We will read some of

the exciting stories from our book.

We will be reading several novels this year starting with The Thing about Georgie by Lisa Graff.

Spelling We will have a pretest at the

beginning of the week. If you make an A+ on it, you do not have to take the test on Friday!

Spelling test will be given and taken by the computer this year.

We will be playing all sorts of fun games on the Spelling City website.

Social Studies We will learn all

about US History. We will begin with

early civilizations and end with current events.

Science We will cover many

aspects of physical science.

We will also cover plant and animal life.

There will be a lot of experiments!

Math Will be in the

afternoons with Mrs. Kocher.

You will be expected to be on time and ready for her class.

Religion You will have Religion

with Mrs. Hart. You will also be

responsible for being prepared for her class and getting there on

time!

Class Rules Respect yourself and others. Respect property. Be responsible. Have a good attitude!

Consequences1. Verbal warning

2. 1st Checkmark – loss of $10.00

3. 2nd Checkmark – loss of $20.00 and ten minute detention – call or note home

4. 3rd Checkmark – loss of $30.00 and 30 minute detention – referral to principal

5. 4th Checkmark – loss of $50.00 and Saturday School

Classroom Store For each day that you are at school,

you will receive $5.00. I will open up the store every other

Friday. You can spend your money, or save up

for more expensive items.

Homework Policy All work must be turned in by 8:00 am to be considered on

time!

If all homework is turned in on time for a week, you will get to play HOMEWORKOPOLY! Late assignments:

One day late is lowered by one letter grade. Two days late is lowered by two letter grades Three days late is lowered by three letter grades

After the third late assignment in a quarter, you will be required to serve a 30 minute detention.

HOMEWORKOPOLY

We will play HOMEWORKOPOLY once a week.

You will only get a turn to play if you have turned in all of your homework for the whole week, in all of your classes.

Routines Please follow the morning routine

poster every morning. Please follow the end of the day routine

when it is time to go home. This will make our day start and end

smoothly.

Classroom Jobs Jobs in 5th grade include: Trash pickup, door

holder, computer technician, messenger, librarian, assignment person, and banker.

It is your responsibility to make sure the obligations of each job are done correctly, or there could be a deduction in pay.

Classroom Job Descriptions

Trash – take trash out at the end of each day. Put a new garbage bag in.

Line Leader – First in line behind the door holder

Library Books – check the library tub periodically through the week

Water plants – Fill half full / 2 times per week

Door holder – hold door, carry the student key White boards – erase at the end of the day Banker – pass out $5.00 per day Messenger – errands Game Show Host – You are in charge of

Homeworkopoly every Friday Computer Technician – make sure daily assignment

are put on the wiki, turn on and off the projector, etc. Assignments – Write assignment in blue on the

whiteboard Paper Passer – pass out paper, put notes into

mailboxes, straighten homework

Compliment Jar Each time I see the class doing something

exceptional, I will add a handful to the jar. Walking quietly up and down the stairs and in the

hallway Working productively Being kind to others Having a good attitude

When the jar is full, we will have a party!

Binders You will be responsible for keeping your

binders organized and neat. You will need a tab divider for each subject. Most of your homework assignments will be

3-hole punched, so they can go into your binders.

We will put our binders together tomorrow.

Lunch Count Mark your own lunch choice on the

sheet. Please make sure you are marking in

the right spot. Do not mark anyone else’s lunch

choice.

Assignment Notebook You will be responsible for writing all of your assignments in

your notebook. The best way to keep track is to write down the assignment, as

SOON as you get it. If you wait until the end of the day to write all of your

assignments down, it’s too late! You are busy doing other things like packing up, cleaning the room, and doing classroom jobs.

We will be getting homework buddies soon. They will help you to remember to take home everything you need for the day.

Signing Out You will be allowed to use the restroom and get a drink during

the following times: Before school, in between classes, before lunch, after

lunch, and when we take a class break. If you need to use a sign-out during class time, you must

sign out on the clipboard. You must write your name, the time you leave, destination, and the time of your return.

You will only be allowed 2 sign-outs per week, without penalty. Each additional sign-out will cost $5.00.

Library Our class will visit the library on Thursday during 2nd period. You can return books daily to the library tub. The person who is in charge of library books will be responsible

for taking the books to the library each day. Trips to the library during non-scheduled times will be kept to a

minimum and only when other work is completed. There are hundreds of excellent books in the classroom library

that can be checked out at any time.

First Project I want to learn all about you! Answer all of the questions on the All About Me

sheets in your BEST handwriting. Then color with colored pencil or crayon. Cut out along the edges and use a glue stick to glue

onto a large piece of construction paper. This assignment is due by Friday, August 21st.
