Bargaining Update is a monthly report that provides information about the unionized workforce, primarily in Alberta.
The settlement data reported in this issue of Bargaining Update is based on the collective agreement settlement information received by Mediation Services in October 2019. In October 2019, Mediation Services received settlement information regarding 43 bargaining relationships encompassing 7,282 employees. There were 31 private sector and 12 public sector settlements, covering 3,497 and 3,785 employees respectively.
Highlights
Extendicare (Canada) 482 Extendicare (Canada) employees represented by CUPE ratified a 48 month collective agreement on October 29, 2019. Lehigh Hanson Materials A strike involving 56 employees of Lehigh Hanson Materials, Inland Concrete in Calgary and Teamsters Local 362 ended on October 1, 2019 with the ratification of a 24 month collective agreement. Wood Buffalo Housing & Development A strike/lockout between Wood Buffalo Housing & Development and CUPE Local 1505 that began in May 2019 affecting 43 employees was settled on October 17, 2019 with the ratification of a 36 month collective agreement.
Agreements Ratified To date, 257 agreements were ratified between January 2019 and October 2019. 166 settlements affecting 36,229 employees were negotiated. 88 settlements affecting 37,236 employees were settled through the mediation process. Three agreements affecting 2,922 employees were settled by arbitration.
