The Benedictine Spirit EveryonehasastoryabouthowtheyarrivedatBenedictineCollege.EveryonecomestoAtchisonfordifferentreasons.Butforallthevarietyinourjourneys,thereisonethingweshare:thatdefiningmomentwhentheBenedictineSpirithitsusinavisceral,indescribablewayandwejustknow–thisistheplace. Whatisitaboutthisplace?BenedictineCollegeisacommunityunifiedbytheSpiritofSts.BenedictandScholastica;livingouttheBenedictinevaluesofhospitality,stabilityandexcellencethroughvirtuesothatinallthingsGodmaybeglorified. Youseethatspiriteverywherehere. YouseeitintheBenedictineCollegestudents:Ourstudentscometousseekingknowledge,butreceivearicherexperiencethatextendsbeyondtheclassroom,thecourtandtheplayingfield. Youseeitinourfacultyandstaff:Thesededicatedindividualsareherenottobecomerichandfamousbutbecausetheylovethestudents.Theydeservethebestineducationalresources. Youevenseeitinourprospectivestudentsandtheirfamilies:ThousandsoffamiliesconsiderthisBenedictineCollegeeducationeveryyear.Wemustcontinueprovidingstateoftheartfacilitiesandacademicprogramstoattractthebestandthebrightest;alongwiththeoneswithuntappedpotentialwhointhiscommunitywilldiscoverwhotheyaremeanttobe. TheBenedictineSpiritspreadstothoseindividualswhohavenoestablishedconnectionwithus,butwitnesswhatwearedoingandwanttobeapartofit. And,ofcourse,thespiritisstronginouralumni:Menandwomenwhohavegonebeforeus,andwhoreturnhomeandwitnessthetransformationthathastakenplace,areamazed,stunned,andmoreproudofBenedictineCollegethantheyeverthoughtpossible. WecelebratethisgiftofBenedictineCollegeandshareitwithothers.Howdowetakewhathappenshere,physically,emotionally,spirituallyandtranslateittoothersandhavethemunderstandhowutterlyamazingthisis? Beginbyreturningtocampusandbringafriend.Referaprospectivestudent,yoursons,daughters,niecesandnephews.Sendusyourgrandchildren.Beproudofyouralmamaterandremembertoprayforus.Andwhenyouareable,pleasesendusyourdonations. AsaRavenathlete,DJHowell’07,spentmanyhoursintheBenedictineCollegeAminoCenterandontheRavenfootballfield,buthisbestmemoryofthecampusiswherehemethisfuturewife,DiamondAnthony’07.Theybegandatingassophomoresandweremarriedintheirsenioryear. “ThefirsttimeIsawDiamondwasataBSU(BlackStudentUnion)meetinginspring2005.Onedayafterthatmeeting,infrontoftheAdmin.building,Iaskedherforahuganditwasalluphillfromthere.IknewwhenIaskedheroutthatshewastheoneIwasgoingtomarry.Istillconsiderhermybestfriendtothisday,”saidDJ. AftergraduatingwithadegreeinSportsManagementandaminorinBusinessAdministration,DJcontinuedtoplayfootball,andisinhissecondseasonwiththeWichitaWild,ateamassociatedwiththeIndoorFootballLeague. DJfondlyremembersRavenfootballtriumphsoverMissouriValleyatHomecomingandtheEvangel,theeventualHAACchampions,duringhisseniorseason.DiamondremembershercampuscontributionsasthepresidentoftheBlackStudentUnion,whichhostedmovienights,poetryslams,guestspeakersandaValentine’sDaydanceforBCstudents. TheHowellscontinuetosharetheirRavenprideasactiveBenedictineCollegealumni,givingannuallytotheBCFundeachyearwhentheyreceiveaphonecallfromFund-A-Raven.

“Wesimplywantedtogivebacktothecollegethathasgivensomuchtous–phenomenaleducations,alifelongpartnershipandfamily,andthefondestofmemories,”saidDiamond. “Wehopetocontinuetoseethecollegethriveandgrow.WealsohopeourfuturegivinghasanimpactonthegrowingdiversityatBenedictinebyultimatelybringingmorestudentswhorepresentdiversebackgrounds.” DJandDiamondmarriedin2006andhaveonedaughter,Dianalynn.Apassionforworkingwithat-riskyouthfromexperiencesattheAtchisonYMCA,ledDJtohiscareerasayouthcarecounseloratOzanam,aresidentialanddaytreatmentcenterinKansasCity.Diamond,whograduatedwithadegreeinpsychologyfromBC,earnedhermaster’sdegreefromPittsburgStateUniversityinteachingwithanemphasisinspecialeducation.SheisaspecialeducationteacherforUSD500KansasCity,KansasPublicSchools. Allgifts—nomatterthesize—count.Collectivesmallergiftsamounttoconsiderablesums.Infiscalyear2009-2010,alumni,parents,andfriendscontributed$1.1milliontotheBenedictineCollegeFund.Alumniparticipationisalsoanimportantindicatorofthestrengthofaninstitutionandastatisticwatchedcloselybyphilanthropicfoundationsandorganizations.Inaveryrealsense,acommitmenttoannualgivingistantamounttoanongoingalumnivoteofconfidenceforBenedictineCollege.

Somekidsgrowupcollectingbaseballcards.NotScottKennedy.Thehighschoolsenior’sbedroomdisplayedmuchlessconventionalchildhoodheirlooms:BenedictineCollegebeanies.Hegrewupunderthewingofplentyofformerwearersoftheinfamouscaps. ScottwillbethesixthmemberofhisimmediatefamilytobecomeaRavenwhenheenrollsatBCnextfall.Hewillfollowinthefootstepsofhisparents,grandparentsandolderbrotherasathird-generationlegacystudent. ThatlegacybeganataSt.Benedict’sCollegedance57yearsago.DavePerkinsknewhehadadauntingchoicetomake.MinutesafterenteringtheHavertyCentergymnasiumforanannualSBCsponsoreddance,hespottedtwoMSSCfreshmenattheentrance. Perkins’dilemmawasimmediatelyclear. “IthoughttomyselfthatIhadtomakeaquickdecision:theblondeorthebrunette,”saidtheIllinoisnative.“SoIdecidedthatIwouldgoaskthebrunetteforthefirstdance.”

Thebrunette,AdeleDeFeo,notonlysaid“yes,”thatnight,but“Ido”almostexactlythreeyearslater.MissDeFeobecameMrs.PerkinsafterthetwospenttheircollegeyearshikingacrossAtchisonbetweentheMountandSt.Benedict’scampuses. ThepairtiedtheknotDave’ssenioryear.AdelehadlefttheMountafterthreeyearsofeducation.DaveservedintheArmyforthreeyearsbeforeworkinghiswaytobecomingaprivatecontractor. Adelestayedathometoraisetheirfourchildrenfor15yearsbeforeearningherdegreeandworkinginspecialeducation. ManywhoattendBenedictinetodaysayacampusvisitwasthedealbreakerthatfinalizedtheirdecisiontobecomeaRaven. ThesameheldtrueforPatKennedyintheearly’80s.AfterapplyingatKansasStateandFortHaysState,hedecidedtoseeBenedictineupcloseandpersonal,andwasimmediatelysold. “IthinkIlikedthefactthatitwassmall,thecommunity,”saidtheTopeka,Kan.,native.“Myparents

didn’tcomehere.Ididn’thaveanyrelativesorknowanybody.” Despitebeingafirst-generationRaven,Kennedysaidhelatchedontothatcommunityandcreatedmanylastingmemories. Inadditiontomakingbonfiresatthecavesandstudyingwithfriends,herecallssittinginacornerclassroominSt.BenedictHallandmeetinghisfuturewife:BethPerkins. ThethirdofDaveandAdele’sfourchildren,Bethsaidherparentsneverpushedhertoattendtheiralmamater.DavehadapacketofinformationsenttotheirhomeafterBethhadexpressedinterest,butthatwasit. “Icameherefortworeasons,”Bethsaid.“One,becausemyparentswenthere,andtwo,becauseit’sCatholic.” BethtookKennedy’slastnametwoyearsafterthe1986graduatesleftBenedictine.TheirpathtogetherthroughcollegemirroredthatofBeth’sparents. WhenPatandBethKennedy’sson,Sean,steppedontocampusthisfall,heknewwhattoexpect.

“WevisitedandIlikedit,”saidthefreshmancriminologymajor.“Thebigthingwasitwassmall,ithadthemajorIwanted…Also;atalotofbigschoolstheykeepthereligionoffcampus,sothefactthatwehaveaccesstoreligionherewasabigpull.” Inonlytwomonthsofcollege,Seansaidhe’salreadyfalleninlovewiththesamethingsaboutBenedictinehisparentsandgrandparentsdid. “I’vegotareallygoodgroupoffriendsalreadythatIhavealotoffunwith,”hesaid.“Weekdaysareallschoolandwork,butthenweekends—DaylightDonutseveryday,godowntothecaves,exploredaroundcampus.We’vemadefiresdownatthecavesandhads’mores.” Sean’syoungerbrothercan’twaittoexperiencethesamething.ScottKennedynotonlycollectedhisparents’andgrandparents’freshmanbeaniesasayoungster,buthasalwayshadaloveforthecollegeanditspatronsaint. “He’swantedtogoheresincehecouldtalk,”saidhismother,Beth. “OneChristmas,allhewantedwasastatueofSt.Benedict,”AdelePerkinssaid.“SoDaveandIgothimoneandIdon’teverrememberseeinghimhappieronChristmasthanonthatone.” ScotteventookSt.Benedict’snameathisCatholicConfirmation.“IguessIwasjustmeanttogohere,”hesaid. FamilyWeekendmarkedthefirsttimeBethKennedy’sparents,husbandandchildrenwereonBC’scampusatthesametime. ItwasonlythesecondtimesincegraduationthePerkinsmadethetripbacktoAtchison.Theotheroccasionwasthe50thanniversaryofDave’sgraduation. “Our50threunionwasthegreatest,”Adelesaid.“Imean,Ihadn’tseensomeofthesepeoplefor50years

anditwaslikewepickeduprightwhereweleftoff.” “Everytimewecomehere,weseesomebodythatwewenttoschoolwith,”Bethsaid.“Theremustbethreeorfourofourgoodfriendswhohavefreshmenherenow.It’sreallyneat.” AllthreegenerationsofKennedysandPerkinsagreedthosefriendshipsareadirectresultofBC’stight-knitstructureinsideandoutsidetheclassroom. “That’soneofthereasonswhyweandourkidschoseit,”DaveKennedysaid.“Youdon’twantaclasswith500or600students.Theteachersknowyou,peopleknowyou…Ithinkthat’swhatmakesitnice,tofeellikepartofafamily.” SeeingtheirchildrenandgrandchildrenliveasapartoftheBCfamilybringsanear-to-eargrintoAdeleandDavePerkins’faces. “I’msoproud,”Adelesaid.“IwassoproudofSeanwhenhetoldushewascominghere,andI’msoproudofScott.Youdon’treallythinkanythingofit,butlookingbackandseeingwhatallthismeansisprettyspecial.” Scott’scollectionofbeanieswillincreasenextfallbyone…hisveryown.

PLANNED GIVING

Thinking you don’t need a will, or that only rich people need a will. Don’tyoubelieveit.Everyoneneedsawill.Ifyouownproperty,orevenifyouanticipateyourestatewillbesmall,it’sstillimportanttohaveawill.

Thinking you only need a will if you have dependents. Again,anyonewhoownspropertyneedsawilliftheywanttohaveasayinwhoreceivesit.Awillreducesdelays,reducesprobatecostsandothercosts,andminimizesestatetaxes.

Believing the state will take care of everything for you.Ifyoudiewithoutalegalwill,youhavenowayofensuringyourassetswillbedistributedasyouwouldlike–yougivethestatewhereyoulivetherighttodecidewhowillreceiveyourproperty–and,assetsmaygotoheirsthatyouhadnointentionofprovidingfor.Preparingaproperwillistheonlywayyoucanbesurethatyourlovedonesaretakencareofandthat

yourfavoritecharitiesarerememberedasyouwish.

Thinking you don’t need a will because your property is held jointly with your heirs with rights of survivorship. Therecanbeadvantagestodoingthis,butjointownershipdoesnotreducetheneedforawill,andcanevencreateunintendedgifttaxliability.Itcanalsodenyyoucontroloveryourpropertywhileyou’restillliving.

Writing your will by hand.Ahandwrittenwillisnotlegalineverystate.Yes,thereareplaceswhereahandwrittenwillisperfectlyvalid,butissavingthecostofanattorney’sfeeworththeriskofhavingyourwillinvalidated?

Not keeping your beneficiary designations up-to-date. Whenyouestablishsavingsaccounts,annuities,lifeinsurancepolicies,andindividualretirementaccounts,younamebeneficiariesaspartofthe

process.Youshouldbeawarethatthesenamedbeneficiarieswilltakelegalprecedenceoveranyinstructionsinyourwillaboutdistributingyourassets.Whenyoudraftyourwill,besuretoreviewallofyouraccountstomakesureyourassetswillgowhereyouwant.

Believing you’re too young to need a will. Don’tfallintothistrap.Actually,thisiswhenyouneedawillthemost.Aproperlydraftedwillisyourwaytoprovidedetailedinstructionsforthecareofyoungchildren,andprovidesyouwiththefoundationyouneedtobuildastrongfinancialfuture.

Leaving everything to your spouse: This is the obvious choice for many people, but there are a few issues to consider:

•Ifanaccidentclaimsyouandyourspousebeneficiaryatthesametime,thestate

maybeincontrolofdistributingyourassets.

•Ifyourspouseisnottheparentofyourchildren,evenifyoubothagreeonwhattodowithyourpropertyuponyourdeath,thereisalwaysthepossibilitythatunintendedbeneficiariesmayreceiveyourproperty.

•Yourspousemaynotfeelthesamewayyoudoaboutanheirorcharity.Thismaymeanthatbequestsyouwouldliketomakegounfulfilled.

So,unlessyouhaveacrystalballandcanpredictthefuture,anup-to-datewillshouldbeonyour‘todo’list.

LeeSollazzoPrattBuhrman’46,Omaha,Neb.,walkedintoabeautyshoprecentlyandholdingthedooropenforherwasayoungladynamedDanielleDyer.ThetwobeganchattingandDaniellementionedshewasleavingforcollegeat“BenedictineCollegeinAtchison!”Danielle,ofOmaha,isacurrentfreshman.

TomAnderson’55,Albuquerque,NM,isrunningforhisfifthtermasNewMexicoStateRepresentative,District29.In2010,hewelcomedthearrivalofhis10thand11thgrandchildren:aboy,Erin,inFebruaryandagirl,MaddyRose,inJuly.

RichardForge’58,Leavenworth,Kan.,hasretiredafter36yearsofdedicatedserviceasasocialworkerattheLeavenworthVeteransAdministrationHospital.Hisretirementplansincludetendingtohisvineyardandfarm,volunteeringasaclinicalsocialworkeratvariouslocalagencies,traveling,andenjoyingtimewithhiseightgrandchildren.

LawrenceSink’62,continuestoactivelyserveontheAdvisoryBoardforCatholicCharitiesoftheArchdioceseofChicago.Larryisnowcelebratinghis10thyearinvolvementwithCatholicCharitiesandwrotetheirfirstbusinessplanpro-bono.Larryretiredasanexecutivevice-presidentofmarketingfromtheEducationalPublishingandTechnologiesIndustry.

Sometimesyoumakealumniconnectionsinthestrangestofplaces—yourownbackyard. EdCiarniello’70andBobBell,ofSteelville,Mo.,havebeenworkingtogethersince1983whenEdsoldBobhisfirstpieceofequipmentwhenhewasstartinguphiscompany.Butitwasn’tuntilseveraldecadeslater,thisAprilinfact,thattheydiscoveredtheirRavenconnection.EdfoundoutthatBob’sdaughter,MaryBell’10,isasenioratBenedictineCollege.Nowthetwomenareworkingtogethertohelpourengineeringprogram. BobBell,withbrothersDennisandJohn,builtandoperateSteelvilleManufacturing,atoptiermilitaryaerospacecomponentsupplier(www.steelvillemfg.com).BobalsoownsandoperatesoneofMissouri’smostuniqueandhistoriclodges,WildwoodSpringsLodge(www.wildwoodspringslodge.com)alsolocatedinSteelville. Thelodgeandthemanufacturingplantarejuxtaposedtooneanother.Thelodgehasthecharmandeleganceoftheearly1920’sandthemanufacturingcompanyhasthemostadvancedtechnologyofthe21stcentury.But,botharerootedinthesmalltownfriendlinessandhospitalitythatisverysimilartotheBenedictine’s. TeamworkbroughtEdandBobtogetherrecentlyin

theireffortsonbehalfoftheBenedictineCollegeEngineeringProgram.Edhasvolunteeredhistime,securedanddonatedlabequipment,andintroducedtheprogramtootherswhocouldassist.Bobhasofferedinternshipsforengineeringstudentswithhiscompany.Theirgenerosityhelpsboththecollegeandourstudents. PerhapsnooneepitomizesthatdedicationmoreclearlythanDaveDamasauskas’87.Hehasspentcountlesshoursadvising,cajoling,andencouragingpeopletohelpgettheprogramofftheground.WhileworkinginmanagementatSprintAeroSystemsinWichita,Davealwaysfindstimetohelphisalmamater.Whetheritbefindingthebestpriceonlabequipmentorfundingopportunities,Daveisadrivingforcebehindoursuccess. DuringtheopeningofthematerialslabonSeptember18,PresidentMinnissingledoutbothEdCiarnielloandDaveDamasauskas.
