Dear Ridgewood Recycler,Happy Anniversary! Yes, 2017 marked the 30th Anniversary of Mandatory Recycling in New Jersey. In 1987, the “Garden State” became a recycling trailblazer when Governor Kean signed the “New Jersey Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act”. But did you know that Ridgewood’s recycling story began long before that?
From the early 1970s to 1988, Ridgewood maintained a drop off center for the voluntary collection of recyclables. In July 1988, the “Recycling Act” went into effect and participation in recycling at the drop off center became mandatory. Curbside collections entered the scene in the 1970s as well, but until 1991, were limited to metals and newspaper/junk mail. On January 2, 1991, a comprehensive curb-side collection program was instituted which included the collection of cans and bottles, cardboard, newsprint, mixed papers, and metals. In the years following, we have continued to add items to our program and to make cautious, but forward-thinking decisions in our offerings. To what end?
In the past 30 years Ridgewood has:• Saved over $12 million in avoided landfill fees• Earned over $5 million from the sale of recyclable materials• Kept over 140,000 tons of material out of the landfill• Earned over $2.6 million in recycling grant funds• Received awards at the county, state, and national level
Thank you for being there as enthusiastic supporters of our journey and part of Ridgewood’s recycling family. May you have a wonderful 2018!
