#201- The Promise of the Holy Spirit

John 7:37-39

John 7:37-39

• The Promise of the Holy Spirit

• 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

John 7:37-39

• 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Who is the Holy Spirit?

• The Holy Spirit is God

• The Holy Spirit is a Person with a mind, emotions, and a will

A diagram of the Trinity

According to the Bible, there is:

One God

Three Persons

What is the role of the Holy Spirit?

What is the role of the Holy Spirit?

• “Convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8)

• “Bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16)

• Be our Helper (John 14:16) • “Guide you into all truth” (John 16:13) • Gift-giver of spiritual gifts (1st Corinthians 12)• Produce spiritual fruit in our lives: love, joy,

peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)

How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?

Three different levels

1. Inside

2. Fill

3. Overflow

Holy Spirit comes into people who believe in Jesus, like water coming into a cup

1. Inside

Indwelling of Spirit is for all believers

1. Inside

Holy Spirit is given at salvation

1. Inside

Salvation is “The spiritual, eternal deliverance which God immediately grants to those who accept His conditions of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus.”

1. Inside

Salvation is available in Jesus alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12), and is dependant on God alone for provision, assurance, and security.

Holy Spirit remains in you permanently

1. Inside

1. Inside

• Some people ask, “What about people who stop believing in Jesus and end up going against Jesus?”– Answer is probably that they never had Holy

Spirit in them to begin with because they never believed in Jesus to begin with

• Only you and God know if you have Holy Spirit inside you to begin with (if you truly believe in Jesus to begin with)

2. Fill

Holy Spirit fills up in people who obey God, like water filling up a cup

2. Fill

Only our obedience to God's commands allows the Spirit freedom to work within us

2. Fill

However…

2. Fill

However…

2. Fill

However…

The Holy Spirit is God, and cannot be in the same place where sin is

2. Fill

Sin separates us from the filling of the Holy Spirit

2. Fill

• Only our obedience to God's commands allows the Spirit freedom to work within us

• Sin separates us from the filling of the Holy Spirit

3. Overflow

• Jesus said, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”

3. Overflow

• The Holy Spirit’s work flows out of us when we are filled, like water overflowing a cup already full of water

3. Overflow

• Others around us receive the benefit of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives

Conclude: We as believers should obey God to be filled such that we

overflow with the Holy Spirit

May God richly bless youmy friend
