New York, Sept. 9.-.Consideraile stock

was thrown upon the market to-day as a

result of the fears of war between Great

Britain and the Transvaal, and the condi-

tion of the local money market wa:i a con-

tinued cause of uneasiness. The market

took the offerings very well and so very

wide breaches were made in prices. Firstprices of a number of the internationalswere the lowest of the day, notably Kan-sas & Texas preferred and Norfolk &

Western preferred, which fell 1% and 1

point respectively. Decline were not down

to the London parity as a rule, and vigor-ous support was forthcoming at the de-cline.

Kaneas & Texas preferred and Norfolkpreferred recovered their losses and therewas a rally all along the line. Near noonthere was renewed weakness on the cir-culation of alarming rumors regarding theoutcome of the British cabinet meeting.The general level of prices fell lower thanon the first dip. There was a movementto cover short contracts when authenticreports were received of the better teel-ing engendered in London after the cabi-net meeting. About the same time Man-buttan was taken in hand and markedup over 2 points. Metropolitan Streetitailway, Sugar and Brooklyn Transitlose simultaneously. The general level ofprices rose a large fraction, sufficient inmIany cases to wipe out earlier losses.There were some subsequent wide move-ments in special stocks. but the generalmarket continued quiet and dull andprices were not again materially changed.

Tennessee Coal rose aggressively to 117int the final dealings and Manhattantouched 116, the specialties generallyshbowing about the same response. Pa-eitle Mail suffered a loss of nearly 4polnta on the statement of a decrease inJuly earnings, but rallied afterw.trdt.Other stocks to show acute depressionwere Tin Plate. American Hloop, the To-lareo stocks. Third Avenue, Metropoli-tan. West Side Elevated preferred. Leath-rr preferred and National Steel, andamong the railroads. unrelieved, the time loans being held at 5per cent. and call loans for the most partranged from 5 and tup to fi per cent. Thelate fall In call loans occurred after theteeds- of most of the borrowers had beencvot. and was without significance. Aforther decline In thie surplus reserves into-morrow's bank statement is a fore-gone conclusion. The movements of cur-rency by express Indicate a net loss to theinterior by the banks of considerablymore than $3,000,tS00, and the sub-treasuryhas gained from the banks. Includingpayments for taxes and deposits for tele-graphic transfer to the ilterior $t.55t.tutN.No set-off is apparent against this loss ofeash of upwards of $8.500.000. Sterling ex-change in New York fell a sharp fractionthis morning in spite of higher discountrates in London, but tile bankers' ratesfor demand sterling partly recovered inthe afternoon. The recent firmness ofsterling exchange is attributed to a de-mand for bankers' hllsl to cover shortsales made against cotton bills.

It was, as hasbeen the case for acoeral weeks, largelyo, a professolnal kind, though the erraticperformance of some of the stocks whichhave been nubtetted to manipulation bybull pools attracted a certain measure ofpublle buying. Toward the end of theweek the market, in fact, had assumed anoverbought appearance and inclined nogive way tunder the pressure induced bya stiffening in the fates for money andthe more threatening aspect of the Trans-vaal qIteetion abroad.In the latter connlection it may be noted

that while London has increased Its spet .ulative powers in America, there are notbelieved to he any large amounts of suchholdings to he thrown on our market incase of trouble. It is held that the for-eign markets have been warned so longahead that should war supervene the ef-fect on the London money market or onprices there would be alight. In spite,however. of the situation having thusbeen partially discounted, it has creatednervousness In International banking cir-cles and was reflected in tile speculativemarket here by an increased unwilling-ness to take any decideu position. Theadvance In the rate for call money to 4per cent. seems to be the natural outcomeof the steady absorption of money in bus-iness activity.

Tact Saturday's bank statement wasconstrued favorably because it showed asmaller decrease In the surplus reservesthan had been anticipated. The belief is.however, that the banks have beensteady losers in cash this week both tothe treasury and the interior and thatto-day's bank statement may be a posi-tively bad one. The rise in call loan rateswas accordingly a factor in producing themoderate concessions that the list gener-ally exhihited the last two days. Not alittle confidence was shown in the temperand tendency of speculatlon, based on thefact that the crops are now safe and thatthe general husiness is in such favorableand profitable condition. Above all, theboom in the iron In-ustry and the largeprofits which concerns engaged in it arenow making causes speculative movementin securities of that class.

The features of the week were the rapidrise of stocks like Tennessee Coal, Colo-rado Fuel and others of the same group.The railroad stock list was not as activeas the iron and steel stocks, but a gooddeal of strength was shown by the Van-derbilt and granger properties.
