MeetKathyNorris

Likemostknitters,KathyNorrislearnedthecraftinthetraditionalstyle,whileusingknittingneedles.ShediscoveredloomknittingatthecraftsupplystorewheresheworkedinSouthernCalifornia.Shesays,“Theyhandedmeaknittingloomandtoldmetofigureitout.SoItaughtmyselfhowtouseit.”

Kathyusedherfirstloomknittingdesignstoteachothersthefunnewskill.In2005,shebeganpublishingherpatterns.“Iwasattractedtoloomknittingbecause,asadesigner,youhavetofindanewwaytoworkwiththegeometryofknitting.Onceyouhavetheloomknittingbasicsdown,youcanstartexperimentingtomaketheloomdowhatyouwant.”

Knittingloomsarecalledbymanynames.Andyou’llbesurprisedathowversatiletheyare,nomatterwhattheirshape.

Roundloom—alsoknownasa“roundwheel,knittingwheel,spool,orreel.“Itcanbemadeofnylon,wood,orplastic.Roundloomscomeinmanysizes,andthefourthatweusedforourprojectshad31,36,41,and48pegs.Witharoundloom,youcanmakeatubularshapethatworksgreatforhatsandalsoaflatpiecegreatforscarvesandmanyotherthings.

Straightloom—alsoknownas“straightwheel,rectangleloom,knittingboard,andinfinityrake,”canbemadeoutofnylon,plastic,orwood.Straightloomscomeindifferentlengthsrangingfrom9½"to60"(24cmto152.5cm).Theycanbeusedforavarietyofprojects.Weusedthreesizesthathaveapegoneachendinadditiontotheusualsidepegs.Theyhave38,50and62pegs.

Flatandcircularprojectscanbemadeoneithertypeofloom.Straightloomsareavailablewithmorepegsthantheroundlooms,allowinglargeritemssuchasasweaterorahoodedwraptobemadeonthem.

A.Knittingloomtool—Aspecialtooltohelpyouliftthebottomlooponeachpegoverthetoplooportheworkingyarn.Someloomscomewiththetool,oritcanbepurchasedseparately.Ayarnneedle,knittingneedle,orevenanutpickcanbesubstitutedforthetool.
