• Basic pounding of staple foods=not sweet.• Big fuel-powered milling

machines=unsustainable. • Engineers Without Borders- -Rowan

University, New Jersey.• Pilot study in India= altered the machine.• One working machine in The Gambia now.• Now planning implementation

Here She Works

1. ‘Small boy’ sits on the machine2. Helper pours in millet, groundnuts, etc into

hopper.3. One sitting pedals small small4. The machine grinds 5. Bowl or rice bag collects milled product6. Is finish way!

Current Issues

• Seeing if I can remake another one here.• Remanufacturing the device *sustainability!

-Local welder is busy.-Only tech. inst. has tools and knowledge to make the grinder.- Grinding plates bought in US.

• Cost (labor, materials, etc) Funding?• Availability of specific metals.• Time is going, de.

My Vision

• Have local women’s groups ‘sign’ off on the idea - -tell women “you need this!”

• Train local welders to make the base =profit.• Have country’s technical college make the

grinder device- -then sell them in bulk to local welders=puts school on map helping country.

• Have NGO assist in funding and implementation.• This machine could alter gender norms in this

culture forever! (*GAD*)
