WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDALLISTS
The history of the Volleyball Men's World
Championship goes back to 1949. The first
edition was played in Prague,
Czechoslovakia, So far, 17 final tournaments
have been played (the one to be held in
Poland will be the 18th). Russia has had
the largest number of medals; playing as
the Soviet Union, it won 11 medals in
total, including 6 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.
Interestingly, Russia has won only a single
medal as the Russian Federation: a silver in
Argentina in 2002.
In nine cases, the World Championship host team did not reach the podium. Hence, statistically the chances of Poland to win a medal are 50 per cent. In total, Poland have won two medals: gold in Mexico in 1974, and silver in Japan in 2006.

MEDAL STANDING
The top three national teams are Russia, Brazil
and Italy, The United States, Cuba and
Bulgaria also rank high. Poland ranks fifth in
the World Championship medal standing and
FIVB rankings. Czechoslovakia scores better,
as it used to be a major volleyball player
throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In the first
six finals, Czechoslovakia won 6 medals,
including 2 gold and 4 silver.
In 2002, the Russians also won a silver medal
in Argentina. Russia ranks second in the FIVB
rankings, next only to Brazil, which in turn
ranks second in the World Championship
medal standing. In Brazil, volleyball is as
popular as football.
Brazil hosted two tournaments: in 1960 and
1990, and participated in four World
Championship finals, losing only once to the
Soviet Union in Argentina in 1982. Brazil has
been the world champion continuously for
twelve years. It has defended the title three
times by defeating Russia, Poland, and then
Cuba.
Italy has the same number and breakdown of
medals as Brazil, and was the world champion
between 1990 and 1998, defeating Cuba,
Netherlands and Yugoslavia in three
consecutive finals. The team lost only once: to
the Soviet Union in 1978, when Italy hosted the
tournament
Poland ranks fifth with two medals.
The Polish team won gold in Mexico in 1974
and silver in Japan in 2006.
The Volleyball Men's World Championship medal standing almost perfectly reflects
the national teams' position in the rankings developed by the International Federation
of Volleyball (FIVB).
THE UNQUESTIONABLE LEADER OF THE VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL STANDING IS RUSSIA, WHICH PLAYED AS SOVIET UNION UNTIL 1992. THE SOVIET UNION WON 11 MEDALS, INCLUDING SIX GOLD, TWO SILVER AND THREE BRONZE.
