IT SIMPLY MEAN THAT WE ARE DOCUMENTING OUR
8/12/2019 BKB Module 4 Version 7 - Assignment, Referencing and Plagiarism
41/82
SOURCES
Whenever you quote, paraphrase, summarize, or otherwise refer
to the work of another, you are required to cite its original
source documentation. Offered here are some of the mostcommonly cited forms of material.
Direct Citation: Simply having thinking skills is no assurance
that children will use them. In order for such skills to become
part of day-to-day behavior, they must be cultivated in an
environment that values and sustains them. Just as
childrens musical skills will likely lay fallow in an
environment that doesntencourage music, learnersthinking
skills tend to languish in a culture that doesnt encourage
thinking(Tishman, Perkins & Jay, 1995, p.5).
Indirect Citation : According to Wurman (1988), the new
disease of the 21st century will be information anxiety, which
has been defined as the ever-widening gap between what one
understands and what one thinks one should understand. 41
WHY DO REFERENCING?

WHY DO REFERENCING?

We reference to provide details about the sources,
which have been cited.
Referencing helps to:

or works that you have used

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN
8/12/2019 BKB Module 4 Version 7 - Assignment, Referencing and Plagiarism
53/82
WHY O S IT HAPP N
Some of the factors may be:

PLAGIARISM AT OUM
8/12/2019 BKB Module 4 Version 7 - Assignment, Referencing and Plagiarism
54/82
Plagiarism is thought as copying anotherpersonswork.
At OUM, a learner may not be literally
copying another learners work buthe/she may be producing highly similar

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN
8/12/2019 BKB Module 4 Version 7 - Assignment, Referencing and Plagiarism
58/82
When writing your assignment, you will
have to source materials. During thatprocess you may not realize that you are
engaging in plagiarism by:
Use of common source of reference Copying directly from the source without
acknowledging the writer
Producing a paper that is simply a
compilation of materials written by manywithout acknowledging the writers
58
HOW TO IDENTIFY PLAGIARISM?
8/12/2019 BKB Module 4 Version 7 - Assignment, Referencing and Plagiarism
59/82
Paraphrases: A closely reasoned argument of an author isparaphrased but the person does not acknowledge doing so.(Clearly, all our knowledge is derived from somewhere, but detailedarguments from clearly identifiable sources must beacknowledged.)
Outright plagiarism: Large sections of the paper are simply copiedfrom other sources, and the copied parts are not acknowledged asquotations.
Other sources:These often include essays written by other personor sold by unscrupulous organizations. Quoting from such papersis perfectly legitimate if quotation marks are used and the sourceis cited.
Works by others: Taking credit deliberately or not deliberately forworks produced by others without giving properacknowledgement. These works include photographs, charts, graphs, drawings, statistics, video clips, audio clips, verbalexchanges such as interviews or lectures, performances ontelevision and texts printed on the Web.
Duplication: The student submits the same essay for two or morecourses.

Q & A81
Your time is limited, dont waste it living someone
elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma, which is
living the result of other peoples thinking. Dont let
the noise of others opinion drowned your owninner voice. And most important, have the courage
to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow
already know what you truly want to become.
