Just in time for Memorial Day, the city of Bonney Lake is putting the finish-ing touches on plans for the unveiling of Veterans Memorial Drive East, the new name approved last year for the stretch of the Sumner-Buckley Highway that runs through the city.
Signs with the new name have started appearing at intersections throughout the mile-long stretch of roadway, but the official unveiling of the name is set for 4:30 p.m. Friday.
According to Special Events Coordinator David Wells, most of the city coun-cil, Mayor Neil Johnson and special guests such as members of the American Legion will be on hand for the unveiling.
“We are going to take a few minutes and honor some vets by changing the name from Sumner-Buckley Highway to Veterans Memorial Drive,” he said.
The name change was approved by the coun-cil Nov. 22 after several months of discussion.
Council member Mark Hamilton led the push for the name change last fall. Hamilton said he was spurred to propose the change by the 10th anni-versary of the September 11, 2001, attacks and the decade of war that has fol-lowed. Hamilton said the high profile of the road, plus it’s historical use as a military route between Fort Walla Walla and Fort

Even as they look for ways to reduce their already-high building costs, the Bonney Lake City Council seems poised to pass an increase on school impact fees.
The increase was requested by the Sumner School District, though the city council in Bonney Lake is expected to approve more than orig-inally requested.
Presently, the city’s school impact fee, assessed on all single-family homes built in the city, is $1,300. The amount was set by the district and the money, though collected by the
city, goes directly to the district. If passed by the council, the new
fee will be $4,488.Officials from the school district
were on hand at the council’s May 15 workshop to discuss the measure. Initially, the district requested an increase to $3,005, consistent with an increase at the county level, but council members noticed a table included with the request showing that while the district was request-ing the increase to $3,005, internal calculations showed a fee of $4,488 was necessary to meet district needs, as figured by their capital improve-ment plan.
Citing their support of schools
and their desire to make sure the school district gets what they need, the mayor and council offered to make the city’s impact fees the full amount.
“We know that it’s very impor-tant to our schools, that we value tremendously,” Deputy Mayor Dan Swatman said.
Councilman Jim Rackley also defended the higher impact fees by pointing out that money not col-lected from building fees - the people that create the additional demand on district services - must be made up by the taxpayers already living in the district.
“It’s a transference of cost from the new person creating the demand to the broad taxpayers,” he said. “That’s we were are so adamant … in mak-

Giovanni Muscarnera perhaps received more than he bargained for on his Friday visit to Dieringer Heights Elementary School. The 4-year-old was the youngest of four children in the Muscarnera clan, and his parents had decided to let his hair grow long for the novelty of it. “It was always getting in his eyes, and he hates it when we brush it,” father Mike Muscarnera said. “We figured if we were going to have his hair cut for the first time, it should go to a good cause.”Giovanni was one of four children to donate hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a charitable program providing real-hair wigs to cancer patients.Tracie Griffus (above left) was one of the stylists who donated their time and expertise to the lunchtime haircuts.

Steilacoom made it a natu-
ral choice. Plus, he argued, having a major road in the city named for two smaller towns that surround it—especially when the road is
no longer the primary con-nector between them—did not make sense either.
But not everyone was pleased with the change.
Many longtime residents complained the council was removing part of the city’s heritage while several business owners along the stretch of road complained that customers would not be able to find them if the name was changed and that they would incur additional costs because of changes to advertising, signs and busi-ness cards.
After several weeks of discussion, the council
approved the change by a vote of 4-2 with former council members Dan Decker and Laurie Carter voting against the measure.
As a compromise, the city will also unveil a brown “Historic Sumner-Buckley Highway” sign during the ceremony.
Wells said the sign being unveiled - which is designed for this purpose and not one of the road signs that will hang above the inter-section, will be given to the Bonney Lake Veterans
Memorial Committee, which originally proposed the name change in 2008 and is working toward the building of a Veterans Memorial, presently slated for the intersection of Main Street and state Route 410, across from the Justice Center.
The renaming ceremo-ny will take place on the northeast corner of Main Street East and Veterans Memorial Drive E / Historic Sumner-Buckley Highway E. Parking for the event will
be available on Main Street East, north of Veterans Memorial Drive East, as well as at the Annex build-ing at 8720 Main Street E.
Refreshments will follow the ceremony; in the case of rain, refreshments will be served at the Public Safety Building
The event is free and open to the public.

The average person might struggle to find the humor in building codes, but lord knows
Denney Bryan has tried. Bryan is the code enforcement
officer for the city of Bonney Lake by day, ensuring constructs meet muster. And at night, he’s recently taken to the stage with his stand-up routine to make audiences chuckle—or bomb trying.
“It started more than a year ago when, as a gift, my wife and children bought me a spot in a three-day class up at [University of Washington],” Bryan said.
The class was Beginning Stand-up Comedy, taught by Stu Stuart. The for-mat called for students to write a five-minute set on the first day, take peer critique on the second day, rewrite on the third day, and perform in front of an audience at the Seattle Underground the night afterward.
The exercise got off to a rocky start.“I kind of bombed that second day,”
Bryan said. “I could tell when I was up there that some people were shaking their heads, going ‘No that won’t work,’ or ‘That delivery won’t work for that joke.’”
Bryan wound up scrapping everything he had written and wrote and rehearsed a new set the day of his Underground performance. Incidentally, it became the first time he performed comedy for
his colleagues in city hall.“I just made a quick announcement
in the office that day letting everyone know, ‘Hey, I’m going to be practicing my set for tonight if anyone wants to come watch,’” he said. “I think it was a tremendous help to be able to practice
and say, ‘Okay, this is what it’s like to perform in front of people.’”
That f irst evening at the Underground went smoothly enough that Bryan has gone on stage a handful of times since, though he hasn’t nailed down his solid f ive minutes just yet.
“My sets have changed every time I perform,” he said. “There’s probably not a joke that repeats from set-to-set, but maybe a situation or theme from my life that I talk about from different angles.
“That’s my sense of humor. I like to look at the things in my life and dis-cover what’s funny about them.”
Bryan cited “old school” stars like Buddy Hackett, Don Rickles and Redd Foxx as inspirations from his child-hood.
Bryan was most recently invited to be the “Opening opener’s open,” he joked, for a lunchtime event under the Relay For Life banner.
So will he continue?“It’s hard to say,” he said. “You never
know what tomorrow will bring. But if an opportunity comes my way, I won’t turn it down.”

Now you are welcome no matter which way you enter the city.
The city of Bonney Lake on May 15 officially unveiled a welcome at the Eastown entrance to the city.
Located on the south-
west corner of the state Route 410 - 234th Avenue East intersection, the sign is similar but smaller to the one at Ascent Park welcoming drivers enter-ing the city from the east.
The sign was originally designed for Ascent Park, but officials realized it was too small to be paired with the statue at the park
and put the sign in storage until it could be located on the other side of the city following the SR 410 wid-ening project that wrapped up earlier this year.
Facilities & Special Projects Manager Gary Leaf estimated the total cost of the sign and project to be $20,000.
The sign sits on a city
right-of-way so there was no cost for the land, but city officials were sure to thank Eastown landowner Bob Stobie who allowed city workers access to the site through his land.

ing growth pay for itself.”“No one likes high
impact fees, but when you can justify it like this (it makes sense),” Mayor Neil Johnson said.
Superintendent Craig Spencer thanked the coun-cil for the consideration and said the district would not leave money on the table.
“Even at $4,000 for impact fees, it takes an awful lot of houses to build
a $15 million school,” Spencer said.
Not all members of the council were immediately swayed to the larger num-ber, however, and request-ed to see the district’s capital improvement plan before a vote.
The council in April temporarily reduced the city’s traffic impact fee, though a measure to reduce sewer system development fees did not pass. Bonney Lake total impact fees are approximately $20,000 and among the highest in Pierce County.

The People’s choice on the Plateau.
By Shawn Skager Auburn Reporter
The Q13 television studio is an oasis of calm amid the whirlwind of hub-bub in Auburn’s Junior Achievement BizTown.
Behind the camera, Emerald Hills Elementary School fifth-grader Kailen Bergerren silently cues his classmates, Trinity Wyse and Jonathan Williams, counting down with upheld fingers. Five ... four ... three ... two ... one ... and Bergerren points as they go live, beaming out a news-cast to their fellow BizTown participants.
Bergerren, Wyse and Williams aren’t actual Q13 employees, of course. It’s all pretend, although you’d be hard pressed to guess it watching these and other BizTown participants going through their assigned tasks.
Since 2004, Junior Achievement has offered BizTown, a simulation of the adult business world, giving fifth-graders a taste of what it’s like to run a business, balance a budget and manage employees.
“In the fifth-grade pro-gram at BizTown, the young people become employ-ees, consumers and they become citizens,” explains Junior Achievement of Washington spokesper-son Joanne Kahl. “They really conduct a full econ-omy at BizTown. And they come very prepared and focused.”
Throughout BizTown, which features mockups of businesses such as Best Buy, IKEA and Q13, the students go briskly about their tasks as working adults.
“I sign all the checks and give the bills to people that have bought advertising,”
said Williams, the Q13 CEO. “Our ad exec goes out after I print the bills, and hands them out. I may do a couple if it’s real busy.”
The program at JA World in Auburn – along with its companion, Finance Park, which teaches financial lit-eracy to middle and high schoolers – is one of the organization’s capstone programs, Kahl explained.
“Our core purpose is to empower young people to own their economic suc-cess,” she said. “Junior Achievement is really a great partnership with edu-cation... We need to inspire kids about their futures. Inspire them now so they understand that in our free market system in America and if they have a dream, they can make that dream a reality. Education is that first step in making that dream come true.”
In Washington State, Junior Achievement reach-es about 100,000 students in 5,000 classrooms, Kahl said. At the Auburn loca-tion, 20,000 students go through BizTown and Finance Park annually.
For fifth-grade teacher Russell Anderson, the BizTown experience is a vital piece of his teaching curriculum every year.
For weeks leading up to the actual outing at JA World, Anderson and par-ents and volunteers from the business world prepare the students.
“We’ve been doing this for about six years,” Anderson said. “It teaches them personal responsibil-ity along with teamwork. They begin to see how close to reality it really is.”
Anderson continued: “They come back from this exhausted, but so ful-
filled. It’s really amazing. A lot of them will say they have started to appreciate more what their parents do. There is a self-confidence boost.”
The impact on the stu-dents after their BizTown experience is also notice-able.
“I’m the CFO at Ikea, I manage all the finances and bills,” Adam Sjolund said. “I think BizTown is really cool, how it shows how it
really is in real life.”“It’s awesome,” Bergerren
added. “Being an adult and in a business is hard to do.”

Americans are helping to bring manufacturing jobs back to America.
American manufacturing was once the cornerstone of our nation’s econ-omy. Unfortunately, manufacturers started looking for cheaper products in third world countries. This cre-ated the trend of offshoring and out-sourcing American jobs in the last two decades. The labor costs in other countries, like China, were lower and the cost to transport items across seas wasn’t great enough to deter them from moving abroad.
A great deal of manufacturing left America, and it seemed that we were content to purchase things made in foreign countries if it meant a lower cost on the items. However, saving a few dollars at a local hardware store turned out to be no bargain for American consumers as they saw their friends and family members lose their jobs one by one. But now these companies are finding that the cost of doing business overseas is increas-ing and that transporting goods around the world is getting expensive. Additionally, American consumers are beginning to realize we are losing too many American jobs.
The past trends of offshoring and
outsourcing are becoming less viable options for many large companies as labor costs overseas are increas-ing, but have remained stable here in the United States. According to a Wall Street Journal article, “U.S. manufacturers are more competitive with global rivals than at any time in recent memory.” In the past two years Chinese factory workers have seen their annual pay increase more than 10 percent, placing that increased cost onto the poor products they make and ship to America.
A survey done by the Boston Consulting Group says that 37 per-cent of the 106 companies with sales greater than $1 billion said they plan to reshore manufacturing operations. That response rate rose to 48 percent among companies with $10 billion or
more in revenues. The trend toward reshoring, or bringing manufacturing back to America, has to do with labor cost, product quality, ease of doing business and proximity to customers. These factors are encouraging even foreign companies to expand here, like the French tire maker Michelin which announced it will build a glob-al factory in the United States.
The cost of doing business in China has reached its tipping point, as costs continue to rise, manufacturers are going to have to rethink where they produce certain goods. Manufacturing sectors looking into this are transpor-tation goods, appliances and electrical equipment, furniture, plastic and rub-ber machinery, metal products, and computer and electronics. This cre-ates great opportunity for Americans to find local jobs that will not only help them but continue to boost our economy. Currently these products account for approximately 70 percent of the goods the U.S. imports from China and, if these trends continue, much of that 70 percent could come back home to America.

Good news college graduates: You’re an adult. Hooray! The bad news? You’re an adult, sucker.
For the young men and women just released into the wild, there is no armistice in the war between expectation and reality. And reality is a nuclear power.
I can’t give any advice that would apply to everyone. Or guarantee you don’t know it already. Or even claim I followed it myself. But this is My Corner, dam-mit, and I’ll play hack if I want to.
Don’t rush to leave home. Rent on that apartment
will look reasonable, until you realize you didn’t factor in water, electric, garbage and groceries. “New pants cost HOW much?” you’ll say, before remembering you always meant to learn how to sew. If you can, stay home awhile. Pay your folks rent. Set a realistic deadline to move and save your money.
Job hunting is a job. Set time daily to sit down and apply for work. You will probably fail. A lot. But you only need one yes.
Pick up a hobby. In college, you were able to learn something new every three-to-five months. But repetition defines adult life. Keep yourself sane. Read. Draw. Hike. Learn a language. Your life won’t make time for itself.
Sort yourself out before dating. Look, love is nice. And everyone wants to be loved. But if the waters are turbulent enough, your rock will become an anchor trap-ping you in a storm. Or worse: you’ll find you’re someone else’s anchor. Love just works better when you’ve figured out the other stuff.
It’s what you do that matters, not what you “are.” Professors may have praised your potential in college, but potential is poor currency in a land that trades in the real. Don’t insist on your talent; prove it. Volunteer for projects. Stay late. Always strive to improve. And don’t waste time mourning your job when you can use it to do the best damn job you’re able.

Sumner High’s baseball team made school history this weekend, doing what no Spartan roster has done before by qualifying for the State 2A semifinals.
“Last year’s team tied the 1985 team for deepest state tourney run, with a trip to the state quarterfinals,” Adcox said.
To do it, the Spartans bested Aberdeen High 1-0 in round one, followed by North Thurston 5-4.
The Aberdeen game looked like a whole lot of nothing for the first six innings and the top of the seventh. But Tysen Fischen batted in the run that put the Spartans over the top.
From the mound, Logan Christensen kept the Bobcats at bay with eight strike-outs.
The Spartans remained run-less against North Thurston for the four innings while the Rams racked up three. The Spartans made up for lost time with four runnings in the fifth, and both teams scored a run in the seventh, keeping Sumner a notch above at game’s end.
Christian Parsons had 2-RBI and hit a double.
Bryan Adkins had 1-RBI and two hits, one a double and the other a triple. He went to bat three times.
Sumner plays Lynden High in the semi-finals.

Welcome back to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. With some great weather the past couple of weeks, we are crossing our fingers for an awesome summer. With visions of boating, barbecues and hiking in days ahead, this month we are highlighting taking your dog, or dogs, on hikes and some important points to ensure a fun and safe trip while protecting and sus-taining nature’s beauty.
The information in this piece is provid-ed to you in part by Washington Trails Association. We’ve also combined literature from BACKPACKER magazine, which pro-vides some of the most trusted and engaging information about backcountry adventure in North America.
Have you been hiking with your dog? It is a great form of exercise and an awesome bonding experience. The dog is super happy – spending time with its human companion, overwhelmed with excitement with all of the smells and getting tuckered out (great for let-ting puppies and younger dogs exert energy). It gives you that extra incentive to get out of the house, hike to a beautiful destination and
get great exercise.Hiking with a dog is different than hiking
with another person. There are several things to consider before you head out. Where are you allowed to bring dogs and where do you need it leashed? And once you find a destina-tion you need to know what to bring and how to follow pet-trail etiquette.
Here are some rules compiled by the Washington Trails Association:
• National Parks – Dogs are prohibited on all trails in Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks. They are also not allowed on trails (except the Pacific Crest Trail) in North Cascades National Park. Dogs are not allowed on beaches in Olympic National Park, except Rialto Beach 0.5 miles north of Ellen Creek, all Kalaloch beaches (from Ruby Beach south to South Beach), and the Peabody Creek Trail.
• National Forests – Dogs are generally permitted on U.S. Forest Service trails. There are several areas where dogs are not permit-ted or must be on leash; a list is available on the Trails Association website, www.wta.org.
• Washington State Department of Natural
Resources - Most DNR trails require that dogs be on a leash at all times.
• Washington State Parks - Dogs are wel-come, but must always be on a leash.
• King County Parks - Dogs must be leashed on all King County trails. Rules and regulations can vary from trail to trail, so check at the trailhead for posted information. Or call the local ranger station.
Make sure you pack enough food and water to last the length of the trip. Use your thirst as a guide and offer water when you stop to drink – every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on trail difficulty and temperature.
A health risk to consider in our area is that dogs can pick up internal and external para-sites from nature and other dogs that have been on the trail. Avoid drinking from lakes and streams, unless you treat the water, to prevent exposure to parasites such as Giardia. Pack out what you pack in – especially dog poop!
Build up to longer trips (with both adult dogs and puppies) with a series of shorter hikes to toughen paw pads and develop stam-ina. Prevent paw-pad cuts and scrapes with
dog booties you can purchase at REI or other outdoorsman shops or make them with a simple Sunday afternoon DIY project, using fabric (mid-weight nylon, fleece, denim) and Velcro strips.
Also important to remember when on busier trails is that other folks may be hiking at a faster pace without a dog so be aware of your surroundings and pull to the side of the trail to allow other to get around your group if necessary.
Make sure your dogs are current on all of their vaccines, have flea/parasite prevention on a routine basis, and are microchipped in case you get separated when traveling and hiking with them. Please contact your vet-erinarian if you have additional questions; they are the best resource for information about the health and well-being of your furry family member. The true goal is prevention of illness, pain and suffering; to help you, as a pet owner, provide a longer, healthier and happier life for your best friend.
Thank you to our readers – we welcome you back next month. As always, send ques-tions, comments, or suggestions for future columns to us at info@buckleyvet.com. Get out there and give your pets plenty of exercise this summer and embrace every sunny day we get here in the ol’ PNW.
Hiking with a dog is good for both of you
