Editorial – Early ChristmasAs 2016 is gradually coming to a close, it will be said by manufacturers and
consumers alike that it is a year in which the need to dig deep and reach for the
untapped and unused inner strength and capabilities became more imperative.
Strategies defined the landscape of brand
management and execution was the sing-song in board rooms across the country.
Brands continued to spend and talk loud amidst the recession’s high cost of production and shrinking disposable income. 2016
clearly marked the separation of the “men” from the “boys” in manufacturing. Doggedness and determination proved to be another
unique factors displayed by brands with the “men” carting away the prizes while the “boys” drowned in the flood of the bad
economy.
This year also marked the birth of BrandSpur Ng, and in this edition we continued what we promised to keep doing by serving you
insightful and informative brand activities, events, advertisements and happenings across different sectors in the economy that
can make you win in the marketplace.
We bring to you everything you need to know about retail audit/management, how to treat your customers like royalty, new
launches; while the hospitality and tourism section enlightens on the use of ‘Emu Oguro’ (local palm wine) to attract foreign tourist
through exports and we also portrayed the resilience of two young Nigerian entrepreneurs who are making giant strides despite the
odds in the SME corner.
It is our delight to keep you informed and enthralled to the pages of BrandSpur Ng; kindly share your comments and do not forget
to subscribe and share this brilliant piece with your friends and colleagues.
Compliments of the season and see you in 2017.

Treat 'em Like Royalty, get Loyalty…Wondering about how to enhance brand development and harness the power of word-of-mouth advertising?
Hoping to find a formula for creating a client base that will sell your brand for you? The formula is pretty
simple: Treat your clients like royalty, and they will give you their loyalty. ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET
TO ENCOURAGE CLIENT LOYALTY.
If brand loyalty was easy to accomplish, more brands would have it. By now, you have probably heard How to Build a
Brand talking about how to spot a loyal client. He or she is the one with a strong emotional and psychological
attachment to your brand – and has the purchasing or referral history to back it up. That’s identification. Now, how
about creation?
Firstly, purchase-based loyalty programs might offer immediate results, but because they’re based on purchase
frequency, price, and discount, they virtually force consumers to focus on financial benefit alone, spurring them to shop
around. These programs disregard intrinsic value and the forging of human connections. On the surface, you’ll get
loyalty. Dig deeper, and you might find that those customers aren’t really loyal to your brand, they’re just addicted to
the winning sensation that comes with accumulating and cashing in rewards.
In order to create genuine, long-lasting loyalty that will promote brand
development, we suggest treating your clients like royalty. Here are some things
we suggest doing:

Three Words Nigerian Companies Need To Stop Using On
Social Media
Nigerian companies are getting customer service wrong on social media, and it’s painful to watch. I could write entire
articles about slow responses and the useless information companies provide in off-point answers to simple questions, but
my major gripe is with the unnatural, non-conversational and alienating language carried over from corporate
communications (read: emails) without any thought. Note: If you’re the type to say “I’ll revert to your SMS later” in
everyday conversation, stop reading this right away. You’re too far gone for help. Read more…

PLANOGRAMS - Meaning, its Need and Types of Product Placements
Read more...
How do you think buildings are constructed ?With the help of architectural drawings.
An architectural drawing creates a rough print of the building on paper which gives an idea about the floor plans, location of rooms, lobby
and so on. In retail a planogram replaces architectural drawings. Once a retailer opens a store, he needs to have a rough idea about the store
plan. A planogram helps in the same. Planograms are similar to architectural drawings and help the retailer to understand where the
merchandise should be stocked in order to catch the customer’s attention and make the maximum impact. Planograms are nothing but
diagrams which give the retailer an idea how and where to place the merchandise to attract the customers into the store.
Need for Planograms - Why Planograms ?Presentation of product plays an important role at the retail store. With the help of Planograms; a retailer can actually know where to place
the products for the maximum effect. Planogram enables the retailers to stock the products at the right place and at the right time to attract
the customers and prompt them to buy.

Beer Weathering The Storm Upon Economic Crisis…
At a symposium held on Thursday, 30th June, 2016, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, moderate beer consumption,
beer and nutrition, beer and youth culture amidst other related topics took the centre stage..
“In Nigeria, people drink mainly in groups outside the home, rather than at home, therefore on-trade accounts for the bulk of
alcoholic drinks sales in the country. Beer is mostly consumed through pubs and bars, although the introduction of cans has
helped to increase off-trade share,” reported Euromonitor, May 2016, before the event. Not minding the security challenges in the
country and the economic meltdown, beer manufacturers have not tottered in Nigeria. Research showed that11 litres of beer are
consumed per head of Nigerians and this is expanding the beer market at $2.7 billion (about N537.4 billion), therefore expansion
of the market is also looming. Read more...

AbInbev is the world’s biggest brewer and its looming shadows are sending creepy feelings around the beer market in Nigeria and Heineken,
the biggest competitor is responding by spiking excitement around almost all its brands
Caste Lite has crept up and may fill where Star lite has been struggling
Star, Gulder and other Heineken brands in Nigeria are being strengthened to compete
Inside the unconventional strategy of AbInbev against Heineken in Nigeria
It’s guerrilla war in the Nigerian beer market and it is a war guile, gauntlets, cash and craftiness. It’s a war that marketing generals are so far confining to
the boardrooms but which will eventually spill to the bars, clubs, pubs and the streets with all the ruthlessness of a winner-takes-all battle.
Most people in Nigeria do not yet know that AbInbev, the world’s biggest brewer that recently swallowed SABMIller, the world’s (former) second biggest
brewer has quietly launched in Nigeria and with a modest war-chest it plans to deploy to upstage Heineken, owners of Nigerian Breweries Plc. In October
2016, An Anheuser-Busch InBev NV as the company is known in full, formerly took over control of SABMiller’s and International Breweries operations in
Nigeria. This follows the acquisition of SABMiller earlier in the year in a deal worth over $105 billion.
The new company is now known by the trading name of AbInbev International Breweries Limited with headquarters in Nigeria from where it will
simultaneously oversee the Nigerian and Ghanaian markets, a cost management strategy that will significantly reduce duplication and fast track decision
making.

How brewers are selling beer with folklore
As Nigeria’s recession deepens and consumers pockets are squeezed, majority of those still drinking have shifted their
beer preferences to value or low cost brands.
Nigerian Breweries Plc, the country’s leading brewer recently re-launched Goldberg Lager, one of its low cost brands as
“Your Excellency” in a new credential campaign.
The brand handlers said that “Your Excellency, as an appellation for Goldberg reinforces its leading position in the
market”. Patrick Olowokere, Corporate Communications Brand PR Manager, Nigerian Breweries Plc, said “As you
know, the honorific ‘Your Excellency’ is used to address the highest authorities in many political, religious and
monarchical circles.
As a beer brewed to golden standards by the master
brewer, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Goldberg’s excellent
credentials earns it the name ‘Your Excellency’ among
its peers”.
Brewers have learnt that consumers have a personal
attachment to their beer of choice. It is more than just
a beer. It is the consumer feeling that they have a
personal relationship with their beer. The former
SABMiller CEO, Allan Clarke once said:
“People badge themselves with beer. It has an
emotional content,” he adds.

A newly licensed regionally-based commercial bank, SunTrust Bank
Nigeria Limited, has said its targeted customers are youths who are below
the age of 18 years.
This is as the bank urged students and teenagers to imbibe the culture of
saving their allowances and incomes, so as to be able to help their selves as
well as their parents and guardians in future.
SunTrust Bank
Targets Teenagers
As Customers
Managing Director of SunTrust, Mohammed Jubrin, spoke yesterday, during a sensitization programme organized by
the bank for students of the Niger Delta Science School (NDSS) in Port Harcourt, as part of activities marking the
2016 World Savings Day. Jubrin stated that there is no law in the country prohibiting youths who are not up to 18
years of age to open bank accounts, pointing out that an individual can open an account at any age.
“At SunTrust Bank, our target are those who are not yet up to 18 years of age. You can open a bank account at any
age. You must not get up to 18 years before you can own a bank account,” he said.
Jubrin, who was represented by the Corporate Services Executive,
Rowland Onomerike, warned Nigerians against keeping money at
home rather than banks.
“Keeping or saving monies at home is not safe way to save money.
The money you kept in your home may attract criminals.
Secondly, any money you save in the house does not increase, but
the money you save in the bank increases through interests,” the
SunTrust boss said.

An informal survey by CASTLES Lifestyle has revealed that demand for
property is still very strong despite the recession that has hit the economy.
However, the type and pricing of property being requested for has changed.
Interest has switched from the high-end properties to those that are deemed
more ‘affordable’. Another hallmark of the present real estate market
situation is that payment for property is usually structured with the buyer
paying over a period of time, even for completed properties.
Demand for Property still fairly Strong Despite
Recession but…
Another interesting point garnered from the survey is that quite a number of Nigerians (resident at home and abroad) have
substantial foreign exchange and because of the exchange rate, the Naira prices are more attractive. Take the example of a plot in
Arepo which was on the market at N2m. Two years ago, this would have worked out at $13,400 but the price is now at $4,500 due
to the exchange rate going to N450/$1 at the parallel market. A Nigerian buyer who is resident in Texas, United States, snapped it
up because it was now very attractive. This type of Nigerians are quite active in the market and continue to seek for bargains. So
what is the message for developers and those who want to invest in property for capital gains? First, pricing is very important.
Purchasers are demanding the highest quality for what they are paying for. They are also ready to look outside their ususal
locations for properties that will suit their budgets. Read more…

Nigeria is a country blessed with so many natural and agricultural resources. We are so much blessed that we seem to have these resources in

Roasted groundnut, otherwise known as peanut, is fast becoming a staple snack, enjoyed by many people. Whether at home, office or
anywhere for that matter, this tasty snack is the favourite of those, who prefer it to processed snacks, on account of its nutritional values.
Little wonder some traders have gone into packaging it in different handy sizes and at pocket friendly prices. While some eat it with roasted
plantain (boli), banana and even bread, others prefer to take it with garri. Nene Kalu, who has been selling roasted groundnut for 10 years,
said people eat it in between meals or to entertain guests. Still, some people see it as filler, pending when they will eat the day’s meal.
“Aside its health benefits, which some experts say include promotion of fertility, fighting depression, boosting memory, aiding blood sugar
regulation, as well as lowering the risk of heart diseases, among others, people running away from sugar coated products, such as cookies, go
for groundnuts to fill the gap,” she explained. Read more…
